Andromeda: Worth watching?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i'm thinking of buying the DVD set, but it's kind of pricey.

i've seen Trek, SG1, Atlantis and the Outer Limits. those are probably some of my favorite sci fi shows. i heard andromeda is similar to farscape? i really hated farscape, but i'd appreciate any feedback.

thanks guys.

Saying Andromeda is similar to Farscape is an incredible insult to Farscape. You saying that you hated Farscape boggles my mind.

That said, Andromeda had an okay first season, but it got ridiculously stupid after a while, and it never recovered. If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time.

i could just never get around the whole 'muppets in space' thing.

Weird. I know that's a turn off for some people at first, but I quickly got over it. They don't even register as muppets in my mind anymore since they became such well-developed characters.

Andromeda is an abomination, second only in abomination-ness to Space: Above and Beyond.

And "can't get past the muppets" is an extremely short-sighted excuse for not watching Farscape.

I really, really wanted to like Andromeda...the ratio of relatively good episodes in the first season kept me going into the second, but the ratio continually grew worse, and I don't think I made it past the second season.

It sort of did the opposite of TNG and DS9, which both seemed to take about 3 years to really hit their stride.

^That's what's so annoying about Andromeda. It had such potential from the beginning, but it squandered it almost completely.

Count me in as another who bailed when it went to shit and never looked back.

The first two seasons were... uneven, but it had great potential and intriguing characters. Unfortunately, after Wolfe left the series ,it all went to hell.

If you can get past how annoyingly off-putting Kevin Sorbo - having to tolerate watching his smug, smarmy "acting" at all, much less as the lead character, is what drove me away - go ahead and check it out. From what I recall, only Keith Hamilton Cobb was worth bothering with. It was a good premise, handled badly through poor casting choices, bad writing, and embarrassingly terrible production values.

GROWF! :klingon: Just in lead actors alone...night and day. Muppets are okay, if handled well.

But if you hated Farscape, your standards must be well above Andromeda's benighted level, so maybe you should skip it after all. I'll take all the Muppets in the universe over the crap production values of Andromeda. I try not to be shallow and judge a show on looks but it's gotta come up to some minimal standards. Andromeda looked like it was a play put on by a high school drama department using Halloween costumes they bought at Wal-Mart.

As another person who hated Farscape, I can tell you that Andromeda isn't worth your time ;) Great concept, pretty good first episode and then it just sort of died. At least it had Lexa Doig in it though :D

Hey, those muppets could act! Better than some flesh and blood thespians...

If there's one show you should at least give a second chance to, it is Farscape. Andromeda fell victim to Tribune's inane 'cheap disposable entertainment' model, where it felt like they'd concentrate their efforts getting you to watch the first run showing, with little regard for investing in quality that would ensure the show's re-watchability later on down the line. Seasons 1-2 are worthy-yes there are a few rough episodes, but over all, it was a show who's potential outshone it's flaws. But after s2, Trib watered down the show to such an extent, that plots became simpler-dumbed down as the saying goes, all for the mighty causal viewer to understand without confusing their poor wittle brains.

I bought a blu ray player with internet capabilty last month, and thru Netflix, have been watching s1 of Farscape. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a genre show that wants to be a genre show, not afraid of being a genre show, not tip toeing around acting as if it's ashamed of being a genre show. Pilot and Rigel are characters, and are no more muppets than Jabba or Gen, Ackbar.
So, c'mon, give FS another chance...you'll be glad you did.

That's true however if someone put together a Tyr Anasazi set like the Trek Fan Collective Mirror Universe set I would buy it.

Andromeda is a masterpiece --- up until they fired Wolfe 1.5 seasons into the show, in order to bastardize the show by: making it episodic instead of serialized, removing all the internal conflict, removing all the grittiness, and focusing only on the Captain instead of all the characters. As soon as Wolfe was gone, Andromeda instantly devolved from a masterpiece into total garbage.

So is Andromeda worth watching: yes until halfway through the second season. For the rest of the series, no.

Yup, it got squandered for the reasons I've mentioned above. It's the network morons above Wolfe who squandered it, not Wolfe, who developed the concept and made it great while he was heading it.

Agreed completely. Farscape is a sci-fi masterpiece. Andromeda is not. The first season was passable (barely), the rest of the show is shit.

Farscape is NOT "Muppets in Space". Rygel was made by the same people who originally made Yoda (I take it you're not into Star Wars?), but, like Yoda, that's about it.

Andromeda is a show that had an amazing potential. A great storyline that could have been run through the shows entire S5. However they fired RHW and the show descended into crapness.

The first season has a bit of problems at first but after that it runs smoothly. After S1 RHW gets fired and you'll notice in the storyline. It steadly gets worse. If you are going to watch it. Don't bother. I made the mistake of watching all the episodes in the hope of it getting better. Sadly it didn't. The only other episode I rate after S2 is the S4 finale.

S5 was so horrible I just wanted to erase it from my head. The did everything I hate about bad Sci-Fi and the storylines were just stupid.

Oh and on Farscape. I've seen a few episodes and tbh. I could barely watch any of them. They were all so shit. But then again. That is my opinion. If you guys like it then i feel bad for you. I heard it got mistreated and canceled with unfinished storyline..

A muscle bound black guy.

Now in most cases it would lead to stereotypical angry grunt. What I love about Andromeda is that they flipped that on it's head. An gave us a warrior poet that actually reads books. To bad the Atlantis writers didn't take notice.

Oh, don't worry. We fought hard and they eventually filmed an ending, and it was spectacular.
