First 10 minutes

I had mixed feelings about the film (longtime TOS addict) but overall I find it enjoyable if not truly great. However, I thought the first 10 minutes were absolutely awesome. The whole Kelvin sequence blew me away, and while I thought the rest of the film didn't come close to that level of excellence again, it was good enough that I felt like I would have gotten my money's worth from just the first 10 minutes.

Did anyone else feel this way about the movie (first 10 minutes- absolute movie and Trek classic, rest of the movie, sort of on par with or a little better than the Star Wars prequels?).

Oh good lord yes. I'm a fairly jaded person for only being 24 (or so I'm told anyway) and this was the first time I've ever gotten misty-eyed over a film. The music, the imagery, the pace of it... it ultimately set up a better movie than it delivered. There wasn't anything about it that wasn't perfect for me. This little section of the movie is pure gold as far as I'm concerned. It established characters I actually cared about in like 4 minutes. I'm not the hugest fan of the film, over all, but I can't gush enough about the opening sequence.

The first few times I watched it I was a little overwhelmed by the LIGHTS ACTION MUSIC - the LENS FLARES!!! Subsequent viewings; knowing what is to come have been more emotional for me. The last time little Kirk popped out and Goerge died - well I was absolutly bawling.

Yeah, it was awesome. The music was so powerful and so fitting...it really grabbed my emotions and ran with them. Just when George is about to die, he doesn't panic or get crazy...he used his last seconds to powerfully tell his wife he loves her. Awesome. Just awesome...probably the most powerful 10 minutes in all of Star Trek. Again, I really think the music is what puts this scene over the top.

It is no secret that I am a big fan of this film. However, I also believe these are 10 of Trek's most powerful minutes. It rivals Spock's death and funeral, IMHO.

I agree with the first ten being the most powerful in the movie and emotionally rivalling the best moments in all of Trek.

The Kelvin scene is excellent. The movie could have benefitted if it were more like this. This was Star Trek. The rest of the movie was STINO.

Yup, the first 10 minutes are good. Sadly it goes pretty steeply downhill from there.

As a stand alone scene of a movie, the opening 10 minutes are genuinely exciting and moving.

Some of the most exciting first 10 minutes of ANY movie in recent memory...hands down. Got to rank up there with REVENGE OF THE SITH if not moreso and even higher. The emotions whipped up by the emergence of Nero's gigantic ship from the black hole/time rift, seeing Kirk born, watching his father die in the courageous suicide run on the Narada and BADASS ROBAU hamming it up...you don't get much better than all that!:techman:

I had to think about this for a minute because I hate the movie... but yeah, the first 10 minutes were pretty cool.

The first ten minutes of STXI were like the first hour of BSG's Crossroads part 2: pure awesome and then everything afterwards was "meh..." or worse.

Even a non-fan I know loved the first part of the movie and was kinda thrilled by it. For a moment, they joked, they forgot they were watching STAR TREK because it was so "badass and raw." :guffaw:

Wow, I think we may have found something the majority of the people at this site can agree on; the opening sequence was amazing.

I mean... I probably shouldn't ask, but is there anybody out there who didn't like it? (Please... I beg you, don't answer yes just to be contrary.)

I love that sequence. It is easily one of my favorite movies scenes ever. I'll admit that I get misty-eyed pretty consistantly when George is on the suicide run and talking to Kirk's mom. Excellent sequence.

I'm sure 3DMaster could spend hours and hours describing in great detail exactly how flawed this sequence is.
