It could have chosen to, it didn't because they managed to establish communications.

It would seem to been chugging a long happily at around Warp 7 for most of the movie. More or less matching the Enterprise's speed.

Assuming that V'Ger made it from Klingon Space to near Earth in a couple of day, maybe the NX-01s trip to Qo'no'S in 4 days at Warp 4.5 isn't so farfetched. And perhaps, the Enterprise's "quick" trip to Vulcan from Earth in ST09 as well.

In defence of the new movie, some of the stuff is no dumber than the Enterprise refit being the only ship in range to deal with V'ger when the cloud is travelling to Earth all the way from Klingon space or the Enterprise being the only ship close enough to Regula One when she's only just left Earth orbit

I agree that it wouldn't have taken very long to eliminate Starfleet's "armada" (that's hardly what constitutes an armada if you ask me) but I'm in agreement that it happened a little too fast. The Kelvin (an older ship one presumes) was caught almost equally off guard. Even after their Captain had been terminated and the Narada had no reason to hold back the Kelvin managed to stay in one piece at the very least.

The fleet above Vulcan was utterly destroyed. Those ships were unrecognizably blown to bits. I'm not saying Narada wasn't capable of inflicting that sort of damage... just that it's on the 'unreasonable' side that it did it to six ships, simultaneously, in at most two minutes.

I agree with the above. It would have taken much longer than a minute to destroy the entire fleet of ships even if they were caught by surprise.

That would actually be amazing if the 'defects' were coupled with possible in-universe explanations.

Defects are in the eye of the beholder. TUC and FF are defective from start to finish in virtually every aspect of their conceptions. TSFS ain't lookin' good, either.

Indeed. TUC is my all time favorite Star Trek movie. My eye beholds a very good, if somewhat flawed, conspiracy caper. I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. Especially Plummer's performace as Chang. Arguably the best of all Trek movie villains. But that's the way I see it. Your mileage apparently varies.
