Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as 12

Re: Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as

I don't know whether to feel disturbed or relieved with this news, considering some of us 20+ years older haven't done it yet. :wtf:  :scream:

Its a scary situation, no doubt about that, kids just don't get the time to be kids these days, its a sad state of affairs.:(

As I said previously - the number of 12-14 year olds having sex is small and isn't a new thing. The majority of kids today have plenty of time to be kids and aren't being forced to grow up too quickly.

I went to school with a girl who became a mother at 14 (back in 1972). That meant she was having sex at 13 if not earlier. The father of her baby was about a year than she was.

It may not be unheard-of for kids as young as 12 - 14 having sex and getting pregnant. When I was living in another country, one of my neighbors was a woman who first got pregnant at the age of 14. Maybe that's how it is in some cultures, but that's not the norm in the Western world. As you said, it's a small fraction of that age demographic, but why distribute condoms? It's almost like encouraging them and saying it's okay to be promiscuous and sexually active at that age. I have mixed feelings about this ... Most youngsters that age are not mature enough to handle or deal with the consequences. Heck, you've even got 15-, 16- 17- 18-year-olds (or older) who think that sex is just a game or a recreational activity.

The condoms aren't for sex, they're for bagging heroin.

Because if children are going to have sex it is far better that they have safe sex rather than unprotected sex. I am not suggesting that they are distributed to all children just the ones that are known to be already sexually active.

And then of course smuggle twenty condoms of heroin across the boarder in your intestines.

Agreed. Seen in context, this Swiss plan is just another example of the hedonistic developments gone out of control in Europe. And I say that as a European.

True, it is better for kids to have protected sex instead of unprotected sex. It is even better for these kids not to have sex at all. I mean, 12 years old? That's distrubing...

Distributing condoms may not be simply encouraging kids to have sex, but it certainly does nothing to address the problem.

Given that unwanted pregnancy and STDs are the only problems with 12yr olds having sex with each other, I fail to see how this can be the case.

You have misquoted I did not say that. Drone36929 said it.

I up to now have made no statement about the morality of children having sex.

I do believe that the emotional problems these children have that causes them to have sex at an early age needs to be addressed but denying condoms to them simply because we believe that they shouldn't be having sex at their age would serve no good purpose whatsoever. we would most likely end up not only with children who have sex, but also children with STDs and more children becoming parents when they are still children themselves which would mean that these children will end up with even greater problems then they now have.

I don't know what this has to do with "kids being kids." People have been having sex at 12 or 13 years of age throughout most of human history.

That don't make it acceptable was my point, 12 is way too young.

Re: Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as

Did he say it was acceptable? Saying something happens, and has always happened, doesn't mean one approves of it.

It might almost be like that, but it isn't exactly like that. But it exactly like trying to prevent unwanted pregnancies in almost all cases (one of those consequences you were talking about youngters not being mature enough to handle or no?).

Re: Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as

When I was around 10yrs old I was given a packet of condoms for Christmas by my fellow karate students, all of whom were around 18-21. Assholes.

Quite. Much like Miss Chicken, I've made no comment on the morality of the deed itself—merely that it happens, it's always happened, and it probably always will happen. And I think it's far better to ensure safety than to simply do nothing and hope the problem goes away.

And incidentally, I do generally think 12 is too young. But it's not like there's anything I can do to actually stop it happening, so...

Re: Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as

I have never seen a single piece of evidence that distributing condoms heightens the frequency of sex, so I'm somewhat doubtful that it would do harm.

EDIT: Okay, now I think I've fixed the problem.

I don't understand the question. I've stated that I have mixed feelings about the distribution of condoms to young kids, especially because they are very, very young at ages 12 through 14. I have nieces and nephews that age and couldn't imagine them being sexually active. I firmly believe that abstinence (as opposed to distributing condoms) is still the key. It is the parents' or guardians' responsibilities to teach their kids the importance of waiting until they're older. Even schools are teaching sex education. But hey, if it makes it safer to those who are already doing it, who am I to argue with that?

Re: Swiss government produces extra small condoms for boys as young as

Well, i knew what I learned in Sex Ed, but that's about it. It wasn't really a huge topic of conversation among my friends.
Were your friends male, hormone-laden middle schoolers, right? Because that does not compute.

Well and good in a perfect world but in this world we have some parents who have a poor moral code, some parents who are irresponsible or neglectful and some kids who reject any moral code their parents try to teach.

Condoms should be given to the small percentage of children who are having sex too young so that at least the harm is minimised because by the time teachers, social workers etc learn that these children are having sex it is difficult to stop their behaviour.

And you misquoted Mark de Vries. I did not write the paragraph you quoted.

Sorry about that.

Most of my friends were girls in middle school.

My male best friend turned out to be a raging homosexual.
