It seemed pretty obvious.I've been wondering that for some time now. In a previous thread for a prior show, I said I was getting a "God vs Satan" vibe from the "Jacob vs Smoky" thing. But now I'm backing off that a lot because I'm not really getting the good vibe off of Jacob any more.
When NotLocke was asking Sayid about having whatever he wanted, I said in the commentary thread that just screamed "Satan" to me. I mean it really fits into my beliefs and how I was raised in a traditional Christian belief system. I actually don't think they're going there, I'm just saying that's how it felt.
But then Sayid goes back to Dogen and Dogen talks about how Jacob essentially made the same offer to Dogen. And I'm like WTF?
He's tempting Dogen, much in the same manner as you might expect Satan to do.So for me, it's looking like Jacob and NotLocke are kind of different sides of the same coin. It's like one is Satan, and the other Satan lite.
Also last night after the episode, I kind of realized why I've been so disgruntled with this season. And it comes under the heading of something that should have been painfully obvious to me a long time ago, but Sayid's turn to the dark side really drove it home for me.
And that is, barring some kind of magical "reset button," there isn't going to be a happy ending for our LOSTies. It appears they're all either going to be dead, or evil, or banished to the island for eternity, or some combination therof. It just doesn't look like it's going to have a "good" outcome for the characters I've come to enjoy over these 6 seasons.
And maybe it's my age, and my preference for tradtional story telling, but it just doesn't set well with me.

One thing I thought was weird was how Ben seemed to back off of Sayid since he killed some followers of Jacob when he killed Jacob!
Perhaps one is Hades, and one is Cerberus.
I don't literally think they are, but figuratively I feel like the relationship might be the same.

This is one of the best endings Lost has ever done. I think I almost got some chills watching it. I'm not even going to speculate on where this show is going anymore. I'm just going to watch it play out.

I find myself preferring the flashsideways to the main mystery on the island right now.

I have a feeling it's not all that mystical. I would be surprised if anybody could kill UnLocke with a knife. I really do stick to the story that Dogen was expecting Locke to kill Sayid. I think it's makes the most sense.
Dogen figured as soon as Smokey got stabbed that he would react and kill Sayid. Instead, Smokey DIDN'T react at all (probably because he can't be killed that way; I'm assuming his natural form is as the Smoke Monster). If Sayid had been killed, he wouldn't have been able to go over to Smokey's side.
PS. We need a definitive name for Smokey/MIB/NotLocke. All these nicknames are getting annoying!
Let's just call him Locke, since it's still Terry O'Quinn. Which is what DamCarl told him to call him in there official Lost podcast. They also mentioned that the flashsideways is not an alternate timeline universe
The more I think about it, and given what Locke said last night to Sayid about "getting what you want the most," AND given what we know about Desmond's crazy powers (which apparently enable him to change his own past), I have a feeling Locke's exodus from the Island will somehow reset the timeline altogether.
I think it won't be a matter of good versus bad. I think it'll be more a case where Jacob and NotLocke are simply similar in nature. The common label for both? Manipulative.
Jacob and NotLocke each have their own goals, which they manipulate their followers to achieve. Their specific goals are pretty much a non-issue to the story of Lost. Lost's story deals with how the followers deal with the manipulators.
The followers (the pawns) of both manipulators are similar in nature. These pawns need to work together, overcome their differences, so that they aren't manipulated anymore. They need to look out for themselvers rather than their manipulators. As long as there are separate groups (symbolized by the label "the others"), the manipulators will win.
The purpose of the flashbacks is to show that life without these overlords is no worse. Overall, they're roughly similar in quality. These overlords are not providing any substantial benefits to their followers. Their followers can achieve the same things (for good and bad) on their own without serving some higher power.

I think you may be onto something here. Cerberus was Hades' guard dog, basically, wasn't he? This would make Jacob and the Smoke Monster's doings over the past few seasons make a lot more sense. Perhaps all this time the Smoke Monster has been doing Jacob's bidding for the most part, acting as his guard dog, his face and his judge. So when he judges Eko, when he wipes out those mercenaries, sometimes when he appears as Christian, he really is speaking on Jacob's behalf. But all this time he's been plotting his escape, and finally, the guard dog killed the master and is now running loose on the Island, trying to finally escape his servitude.
I remember back in season three the showrunners saying that Jacob was the Emperor Palpatine figure on the show. I haven't been able to reconcile that to what we've seen of him so far, but this would help a lot. The battle between them is just what happens with Darth Vader gets sick of following orders, being trapped, and turns on his master for real.
Yeah, I remember that on the map. Except it's spelled Cerberus, not Cerebus...unless the Dharma folks weren't sure how to spell their Greek mythological figures.

The reason for Cerberus being dubbed that by Radzinsky is just that Cerberus is analogous for a protector to not let anyone to escape the realm of Hades.
I also view it as analogous, and in my own theory I started comparing other figures to the mythology, even though it's probably not right. I equated Jacob to Hades the person for a few reasons. One was that Hades himself wasn't necessarily evil, but he was just. However, he still had qualities like Jacob, where he tested people, wouldn't let them leave his realm, wasn't exactly good, etc. I then compared the island itself to the river Styx, mostly just because we've seen crossovers of the dead, and the whispers might actually be from the realm Hades, where the spirits of the dead lie.
I don't think this theory is true or literal, but it's just one example of many literary parallels that Lost contains. In the end, no matter what the island is or what smokey is, it won't be anything revolutionary or never seen before. It's just going to be a twist on a story we already know, but with different characters and settings.
Cerberus also has multiple heads a la the monster.
