Lost 6x06: "Sundown"

Grade the episode...

Above Average, based on strong performances by Naveen Andrews and Hiroyuki Sanada (Dogen)

It's getting easier to cheer for the evil guys; they just have all the superior actors in O'Quinn, Andrews, and de Ravin.

Yes, I did include Emilie de Ravin. Her Claire this year, while possessed, has made up for all those years of annoying "Where's My Baby?!?!" Just look at those crazy eyes when Kate was telling her about Aaron's whereabouts.

I did sense us taking a step forward tonight. Where that step takes us, who knows?

And who really expects them to kill off Ben next week?

I'm giving this one an above average, but just barely (as in, I'm giving it a grade of either C+ or B-). There were some entertaining parts. And it certainly moved the narrative forward. It was, for all intents and purposes a tragedy -- for Sayid and the Others. But I feel like it was unnecessarily drawn out. It was, beyond the mostly superficial elements I listed above, pointless.

What did we learn? That Sayid loves Nadia? Knew that already. That Sayid is evil? We were told that already. The meaning behind the baseball? Killing Dogen renders the answer meaningless. That Kate is now on Locke's side (willingly? trapped?)? Does anyone really care enough about Kate for that to matter? Locke is gathering strength? Okay ... but why? for what purpose?

I give this episode an Excellent.

The smoke monster sequence was awesome! Still have no idea what's happening, but that's what the series finale is for.

The alt story is not meaningless because there's going to be a choice of which one to go with at some point, either individually or collectively... for some it's better and for some it's not.

My opinion is that the alt-story will somehow lead them back to the island and self correct into the on-island story we're witnessing now making the alt-story relevant.

As for this episode, it was very good. I really did not expect Dogen to die. I wonder if because he drowned in the pool if he'll come back and if so, will he be good or bad? Honestly I would have been less surprised if Sayid or Miles would have boughten it tonight. Still, it's early so I'm guessing Dogen will be back somehow. Also surprised they appear to be done at the temple. And Kate going off with Claire....I don't think that will end well for Kate (hopefully).

I gave it an excellent. Probably a 9.1/10 or so.

I didn't like how so much was jammed into the end of the episode. And once again, no questions were really answered.

Also, Sayid asks Dogen why he didn't kill him, and Dogen starts talking about a baseball? Answer the question!

Seeing the baseball reminded him of his humanity and his previous failings, thus causing him to stop from murdering Sayid. Hence the story about his son dying.

I suppose, but it still seemed weird. When we first met him, he was ready to kill the Losties at the drop of a hat. He also said he would kill Hurley if he wasn't a candidate. Dude's got massive anger issues, is very violent, uses martial arts for offensive purposes, and the only thing that makes him realize he shouldn't do it is a baseball? It's a strange idea of right and wrong. His "scale" of good and evil seems to be off too.

If Jacob promised him that his son was alive, then he probably also agreed to do whatever it took to protect the temple, or whatever his job was. But he chickened out on killing Sayid, knowing that it really should happen, therefore not doing his job. If he didn't do his job, then why should he have any reward from Jacob?

His "scale" of good and evil seems to be off too.

Sure, but isn't this true of every single member of the Others, with the possible exception of Juliet?

Which actually makes me wonder if there's something wrong with Jacob.

Locke is gathering strength? Okay ... but why? for what purpose?
To get off the island, which he's made abundantly clear. We've also been introduced to an entity that's more powerful than him (and, presumably, even Jacob) -- a fact that often seems to be ignored around here, which itself boggles me to no end. That entity appeared as a teenager that warned him that he was breaking the rules, and Locke was both visibly frustrated, scared and angered by its appearance.

Indeed. Methinks that entity is most likely Christian. As much as people think that Christian and MIB are working together/are the same person, I really have a feeling Christian is the third and most important player yet.

I'm glad this episode shook our characters out of the Temple. Now they're on their own, without the promise of it as a safe refuge, and we can really start getting down to business. It appears that FakeLocke agrees with me too, as he sure got down to business clearing out that Temple.

Dogan didn't amount to much, if that is the end of him, but his story of his deal with Jacob reminded me of Juliet and her sister. Jacob healed Rachel if Juliet stayed on the Island, and Juliet's name appears on the lists we've seen, albeit crossed out.

Right now the opposing camps have fallen like this:
Team Locke: Claire, Sayid, Sawyer, a group of Others including Cindy, Jin, and Kate, though those last two may be unwilling.
Team Ilana: Ben, Sun, Miles, Richard, Frank (I knew I was forgetting someone).
Off on their own: Jack and Hurley, though I'd bet they'll unite with Ilana's team soon.

Jacob's plan still seems incredibly obtuse. His followers are in a Temple that's a safe refuge he's set up for them. He gets Hurley and company in there with the ankh in Hurley's guitar case and tells Hurley that they need to get Sayid there so he's healed. They do this, Sayid is healed, but the Others think he's evil. Jacob gets Jack and Hurley out of the Temple because it's now unsafe and Sayid allows Smokey to kill everyone in the Temple. So what's Jacob's plan? Did he intend for Sayid to do what he did the whole time? Kind of a crappy leader if that's how he treats his most devoted followers? Or was Sayid actually supposed to be properly healed by the pool and Jacob screwed up, so now he's playing defense even more by getting Jack and Hurley out of there? Again, he's coming across as a crappy leader, since all he's done is gotten himself and most of his loyal followers killed with bad plan after bad plan, not to mention a pretty lighthouse mirror smashed.

I'm really glad that Locke stormed the Temple as well. I was fully expecting the whole season to take place at the Temple with some kind of final showdown happening there. I'm glad they just went and got it out of the way.

I do not think Kate is going to be on Locke's team, though she might once she finds Sawyer (where was he, by the way? Just hanging out in the cave?). I have a feeling she might find herself on her own.

Well, Kate will stay on Team Locke for Sawyer until she realizes that Jack may be losing interest in her. Then she'll run back to Team Jack. That is, until she suspects Sawyer is getting the hots for that new sexy Other he's been hanging with over there, then she'll ditch Jack and join up with Team Locke. Until Jack gives up on her for good (for realsies this time), where she'll feel unloved and go back to Team Jack. At which point even the Island gets tired of her, sinks itself, and causes the flash-sideways universe.
