Explain your user name!

I was looking through the Oxford Dictionary of First Names to kill time between classes when I was in college, and scribbled down a few names that I thought were really neat, many of them Gaelic.

Ruaidhri means "red king". Red is my favorite color.

When I was first registering with AOL back in '96, the first name I wanted to use was too long, a name from history, so I went back to the list of names I'd taken down and picked the one I liked the best. Any time I register somewhere on the internet I either use Ruaidhri or Ruaidhri75.

so how IS it pronounced? Roo - ahd -ree?

See instructions in signature. :p I got asked this enough that I linked to an old post with the step-by-step explanation.

I'm thinking I need to upload a wav file of me saying it somewhere to answer this question. :)

Purdy - The kick ass assistant in the New Avengers, plus it reminds me of felines

Bear - We are all bears in this family.

My birthdate is a topic of debate since the original hospital went up in flames.:shifty:
Or more precisely, it went up in flames as it sank back down into the howling, endless hell of eternal fire and damnation from whence it came, having delivered it's unrighteous (and slightly sticky) abomination unto an unsuspecting world that would soon feel it's unholy terror via the medium of Internets and Perverse Practices Involving You Don't Want To Know, Honestly.

Accuracy, dear boy. Accuracy.

:D

I was originally CalifornianStrawberries, I can't remember why though. I just needed a username to sign up with and that was the first one I thought of! When username changes were first available here I shortened it to Cali as CalifornianStrawberries is too long to keep typing out. Plus a lot of people just called me Cali anyway.

Depsite the name, I do not live in nor have I ever been to California.
You were CaliBerry for a while, weren't you? How are you anyway?

Hmmm, I may well have been, I forget if I ever actually had my username as that, though I think people certainly called me that at any rate.

I'm good, thank you. :) :techman: How are you, how's America?

Síor is my nickname. Long and dull reason for it, but it's a prefix meaning always/ever. It's pronounced 'Sheer'.

Signing up, the name was too short, so I stuck an 'X' on the end. So now it's pronounced Sheer-ex, or She-Rex, or even She-Wrecks.

I'm almost positive nobody knew how to pronounce it, but I've never explained because I'm also positive nobody really cared. ;)

"JustKate" is a little less prosaic. Originally, back when I was first getting involved in the Internet and chatrooms and such, I was Kissmekate (from the musical)...but as those of you who were around in those days probably remember, the Internet used to be FLOODED with horny 13-year-old guys who took any vaguely feminine screen name as a come-on. So you can imagine how many of them were driven almost to a frenzy by the word "Kiss." :rommie:

Lol. The internet in a nutshell. When I first got online, when I was young and naive, I innocently thought that 'CyberianTigress' would be a cute pun for a name. You can imagine how well that went.

I never noticed the link in your sig before. I am inobservant. I would always just have pronounced the name Ro-ree, with a silent dh. Your way does sound more mysterious though. :)

it's pretty much just my first name spelled correctly... the way it should be (in my mother tongue). my first name is "indrani".

I always sounded it out See-or-ex in my tiny mind. Good to know!

^ yeah 'cos it's Indian  it's actually a really overused/overgiven name in Bengal (the state I was born in). there were at least 4 other indranis in my class all through 10th grade (in India). then absolutely none here in the States for the next three years :p

so what's yours mean? I like reading this thread.

all the funny names involving red shirts seemed to be taken - and I felt kind of old so I'm "Oldest Red Shirt Ever" minus spaces and some vowels for space. This is a lot more fun than arguing about Naval Maneuvers in TNZ!

I remember being a newbie here and being allowed to call you 'Berry'!

Yep. Pretty much. I think that summed it up perfectly.

I just like using shorthand sometimes.

It was too short? I'm pretty sure there are many people (including myself) with 4-character names. Maybe something got changed when we moved over to vBulletin a while back. I know that happened on another board I'm on, and I had to ask the mods to fix things so I could re-register with my original name.
