Explain your user name!

Every time one of these threads comes up, I think I should just save a file on my computer with the explanation in it to just copy/paste on demand. :D

When I was in college, I had a group of friends who all loved Star Trek. We would occasionally write parodies with ourselves as Trek alter-egos. So we all chose what race we wanted to be, and chose Trekkish sounding names.

My friend who did most of the writing was trying to come up with her own name, and I was giving her suggestions. We had just seen the opera Tosca, which I had absolutely adored. One of the minor characters was the Sacristan, and his theme was a delightful little melody that I found myself humming for days afterward. I suggested "Sakrysta" to her, but she didn't like it. I, however, did, so I decided that would be my alter-ego's name. And I chose to be Betazoid, because I was the one who knew what everyone else was thinking.

For years, the only references you could find to Sakrysta online referred to me. Now there are a couple others. David Mack named one of his minor characters Sakrysta in A Time to Kill because he thought my name was pretty. :) That Sakrysta was a Kriosian, though, not Betazoid. He even put me on Fillion's away team, because he knew I was a huge Firefly fan. :D And there's a mining base in StarCraft named Sakrysta, which I just realized shows up in one of KRAD's StarCraft books, so he probably got the name from me too. I feel so special! :alienblush:

My beautiful cat, Kira, thought I was her mother, so I started calling myself Kira's Mom.

She passed away last October. :( She was a precious kitty:

Tom Riley is a sort of alter ego I kinda came up with several years ago. And when I say several, I mean like 7. God that sounds like a long time to me... one third of my whole life... Anyways, 7 years ago, back when I was 13/14, whenever I played with anything where I was making up a military situation, or whenever I daydreamed or made up impossible scenarios in my head that were military related, I would always make the character be a Lt. Riley. Eventually I gave him the first name of Tom, which was odd because Tom isn't my favorite name. I prefer the name Matt, and that's what I intend to name my first male child but I digress. So Lt. Tom Riley was the military character I always used for games and daydreaming etc. when I was younger, and then when I got into writing about 4 years ago I needed a character for a Star Trek story I was working on and just dipped into past names I had created but hadn't used in my writing yet. I didn't get far with it and eventually abandoned the story, but after posting here for a while I was inspired to try the story again with a different approach. After working with the name in writing again, I got around to thinking it would make for a good username here.

Man. You people are demanding. "Explain this" and "explain that". Geeze.

"Squiggy" was my nickname in high school. The beginning of my freshman year I was befriended by some seniors who asked if they could call me that and - willing to do whatever it took to get into their good graces, I accepted. They named me that because I sounded like Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley. I then went to college in my hometown with people who knew me as Squiggy in high school. I started radio at my college station, got my internship via said station, and got several gigs in radio based off that so the name stuck with me until I moved to Atlanta at the age of 25.

Interesting. Back when your name was Squiggyfm, and given your job as an audio engineer, I'd figured it was an onomatopoeia for that, well...squiggy sound that a radio tuner can make when you're dialing in a frequency.

When I joined the BBS many moons ago, I came with the assumption that I should have a Trek or sci-fi themed user name. I was trying to think about something random that I liked from Trek. I always liked the warp core (it's pretty and shiny and has flashy lights and makes that neat noise.... yes, I'm easily amused) so I thought I'd go for that. But the name Warp Core was taken, so I opted for Warp Coil. Lame, I know. I'm tempted to change it but I don't feel like trying to find a new name.

I've had this name for nearly 20 years now. The original idea I think was kind of a SF/F fusion: Litmus = science, Dragon = fantasy. Also I think it was that I wanted to go with something like "PurpleDragon" but I wanted to put a bit of a twist on it. I like when things mean more than one thing.

I'm a dangerous mouse who lives in the post box outside of Sherlock Holmes' London abode and regularly saves the world, but every now and then I like to wear a full body leather outfit and use a whip :D

Just some random number and letters thrown together like OU812 or 4U2P... Nonsense stuff, really... ;)

Keep your personal life to yourself.

"Man on the wave" is a literal translation of ronin, the term used for masterless samurai. I was big into chanbara films a few years ago, mainly Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi.

Well, I'm really into pirates and Molly Roger just seemed a good play on Jolly Roger. It's convieniant that my real name is also, "Molly".

It was also interesting that the same day I came up with the idea I found out there's a internet clothing store called "Molly Roger" which sells pirate themed clothes for women.

I have a Roddenberryesque optimism about the future and I'm an amateur astronomer so it fits. My avatar is obviously a tie-in to the name. The Cat's Eye nebula is an astronomical object which resembles an eye. I love cats too so its doubly appropriate.
