had GARY not flipped...

If Gary hadn't become the entity he had, and had just come back to the ship, and gone on as Kirk's friend, how do you think that changes Kirk's life? Had Gary lived, I don't see Kirk becoming friends as much as he did with Spock. And its clear that by the time we get to the movies, Spock's friendship with Kirk has had an affect on Kirk. Take Spock out, put Gary in, does Kirk's career last that long, and more importantly, does Kirk grow as a person?

Well, Gary turned evil awfully quick in WNMHGB. So maybe there was some of it already there to begin with. Who knows what a 'normal' Gary would have turned out to be. He might have been a bad influence on Kirk. Turned him into the kind of partying weasel that we saw in Iowa in ST XI.

Kirk does seem more 'subtle' in WNMHGB. Im sure he went the extra mile to keep Gary on the right path; being to Gary what spock was to him.

I'm just glad that your thread title actually was about the content.
I usually get lured in by your titles.
I'd think this one would've been Don't Flip Out Man! or Flippin' the Gary.

...oh, I had thought about one of those crazy titles. But, thankfully, I took my medicine that day.
