Kirk/William Shatner Apprecation Thread

^ Well, for one, Pine's (and JJ Abrams') portrayal of Kirk was as a dickish know-it-all ass. Not what we expect from the Kirk character as established by Shatner and the writing staff from the original series. Granted, it was a reinterpretation, but I don't believe that a change in circumstance would change someone's personality that drastically.

He was, at first. And you forgot "shameless womanizer." He used Gaila shamelessly, too (although that part didn't make it into the movie). I was really disgusted with him. But I think that his character arc went beyond that. He was a "genius level repeat offender" because his father died (which didn't happen to Shatner's Kirk), but when he took command, he took up responsibility and maturity with it. I think that particularly shows when Uhura tells him that she hopes he knows what he's doing, and he says, very soberly, "So do I."

Exactly. Oddly they seemed to have based Pine's portrayal on how Picard was shown in TNG's "Tapestry" rather than what was suggested about the younger Kirk in WNMHGB and "Shoreleave."

The other thing that really, REALLY bugs my ass is that they reward the flagship to a lucky hotshot with no seasoning and no real experience. WTF! TOS' Kirk had experience and seasoning. We get that right from the beginning in WNMHGB. TOS' Kirk earned his position up through the ranks even if it was somewhat accelerated compared to the other command officers we saw in the series.

On the Shatner end of things, I'll chime in with saying "Raw Nerve" is a good, uniquely done interview show.

Kirk in XI is an unlikeable idiot. You wouldn't let him run a bar, let alone a starship.

Ah come on Chris Pine was great in Star Trek he brings a different side of Kirk don't you agree or will Shatner will always be James T Kirk to you.

It's not impossible for someone else to play Kirk. It may not even be impossible for Pine to play Kirk. But the character he was playing wasn't Kirk. The writing may be just as much to blame. The only characters in that film anywhere near the originals were Spock and Bones, and Kirk was the most unlike the original out of any of them. He was just an idiot.

^ Actually, I think even Spock was 180 degrees different (Spock needs a hug? WTF!!??), so the only character even remotely like the original was Bones.

Nuff said.

Candidly here's the thing. If this film had been done better with a better overall sensibility and a much better story then I might have more easily accepted Pine and the others. As is every scrap of film shot was a waste of time.

Not sure if he needed it. Though actually, now I think of it, the idea of his relationship with Uhura is completely wrong for him. You're right, it probably is just Bones.

Makes Uhura into a slut as well. He's her superior after all, and it's anyone's guess as to whether she'd have a relationship with him otherwise.

Not more of this dreck.

I liked the movie, and thought the new kid did a decent job. I'd have rather had an attempt to re-do TOS than another wheezy TNG flick.

That said, Shatner is irreplaceable. Somehow my enjoyment of the new film doesn't lessen my Shat-worship.

Imagine.

Yes, Spock is one of the all time great, great characters of television (and movies), too.

Ok Shatner is the true Kirk but what's wrong with another actor like Chris Pine portraying a young James T Kirk he was brilliant in my opinion hope that doesn't annoy you.

Nothing wrong with another actor portraying Kirk, but that character wasn't even Kirk. He was some arrogant moron no one could possibly like.
