Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili has died following an horrific crash during practice, just hours before the 2010 Winter Olympic Games were due to open in Vancouver. Kumaritashvili, 21, was on his second training run at Whistler's Sliding Centre this morning when he slid into a metal pole at one of the fastest points on the track.
He was immediately airlifted to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
German IOC vice-president Thomas Bach confirmed the death in a statement.
"It is a tragedy for his family and the team," said Thomas Bach, the IOC vice-president.
"It casts a shadow over the opening ceremony."
IOC president Jacques Rogge said the death had struck the "Olympic Family".
