The customer is always...an a**hole.

The article calls him a coffee enthusiast. So what's he doing drinking coffee at Tim Horton's?

I found Tim Horton's coffee to be especially delicious on my trip to Canada; however, how can someone be a "coffee enthusiast" and drink decaff? Like someone pointed out earlier, it's like picking up a hooker and then just holding her hand.
You misunderstood my point. I wasn't saying that Tim Horton's was bad. I was questioning why a coffee enthusiast would get their coffee from Tim Horton's and expect it to be exceptionally outstanding. I'd consider myself a coffee enthusiast, but I wouldn't go to a Tim Horton's, Dunkin' Donuts, or Starbucks and expect the same quality of coffee that I'd get in an actually coffee house. I go to those types of places when I'm traveling and need a blast of caffeine, not when I want to savor a cup.

Ah, I see. I guess that mentally I was comparing Tim's to the likes of the many cups of burnt offerings I've drunk during many a road trip from the garden variety service station

Which is, perhaps, most logical, as I have found many service stations and gas/convenience stores with far better coffee than the average Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks.

The strength of it is something of an issue, but the taste of KwikTrip coffee is significantly better than DD's coffee.

I suppose by "coffee ethusiast" he, or they, means he just likes to drink coffee and savor it's jolt in the same way Lindsay Lohan savors her Viccodin and Redbull cocktails. Not to say that he only drinks fine, 100-year old roasted beans that've been pooped out by the finest kittens in the mountains of Peru and used to flavor only the finest mountain spring waters.

Ah, another kernel of wit and wisdom from Trekker, proving that he doesn't know the difference between "enthusiast" and "snob."

So does Tim Hortons coffee taste better than Starbucks?

Meh, depends how you like it and what you're looking for in your coffee. People like Tim Hortons because they're used to it, and it is pretty good. Better than Dunkin' Donuts, for example. IMO anyway.

I prefer Java Moose, their Foghorn blend is stellar.

People like this is why I spend more and more time with my dogs.

The unfortunate aspect of this is when a customer has a legitimate gripe somewhere, are the employees going to be that much less likely to help out because of schmucks like this?

Well, if you're like the guy in the article, who was a repeat PITA, then yes. If you're a first time visitor or even a regular customer, then no.

There are plenty of employees who are unhelpful or mean, even if you're a first time customer who is pleasant. There's not some hard and fast rule about the retail experience being good for people on either side of the counter.

As a General Rule, I believe it is safe to say that when approaching employees with a gripe, there won't be a problem unless the complainant is a PITA.

That's funny, because I've had my fair share of customer service people treat me like a horrible inconvenience just because I asked them to do their jobs. Some people will treat you like crap for no good reason. It's not my fault if someone hates their job, and I sure as hell don't need that shit to be taken out on me. I think some people need to be reminded that they only have jobs because of the customer.

Same here, which is why some of the responses in this topic bother me, but don't get me wrong. Trust me, I know as both a customer and someone who once dealt with customers we/they suck (sometimes). There's many cases, I am sure where the customer is an idiot/moron/PITA/Whatever else you want to say, but the same can be said for the retail workers.

Case in point, I brought a box set of DVDs from best buy a few years ago, got home and found one of the cases were broken. After six tries to get it exchanged (in which, they didn't have it on the shelf, so they had to special order it, when I went in on the day they told me to come in, it had either been put on the shelf and sold, or never showed up), before I finally gave up and said I wanted to return it. The most they were willing to do, was give me the money (credit) on a gift card, pure BS. I only went back a few more times, because I kept running into issues where a particular set/case I got was broken in some fashion.

Mind you, I was always polite, never said one rude word to anyone, never used a tone of voice that was rude or condescending, and yet each time I made a visit, I had to wait a ridiculously long period of time (I understand people get busy, and theres other customers but holy shit, when two or more people just standing around look at me, even acknowledge me, then do nothing, I get pissed off), and when I finally decided to return it, the customer service rep got very pissy with me, spoke to me in a rude manner, and I did nothing wrong.

Of course, I later learned (from someone I had a class with, who also happened to work there), that I was not the first, nor the last person she had done that to, and therefor had faced disciplinary action from it. Though, he could have been saying that to make me feel better.

The point is, I'm sure that the guy was an asshole, I have no doubt about it (I never get the logic of not liking a particular something, but willingly continuing to be involved with it), but not all customers are assholes, nor are all retail personnel assholes.

No not all customers are Assholes, but the ones that are make you feel bad enough at the end of the day, that you loath any and all people you come across.

I'm always polite and professional but when they get the finger out and scream and belittle you it's like a piece of your soul is getting ripped out day in day out and its demoralising.

Oh and

I don't hate my job, I love my job, so do many people in the customer service industry. I don't treat anybody like crap, I love meeting new people but it's when people come and treat me like crap simply because I'm stood behind a desk with a uniform on that it annoys me. I've been spat at, yelled at, punched in the face, had things thrown at me, by ignorant drunk, drug addled, stuck up pains in the neck and their continuing justificaton is that "I'm the customer, I pay your wages."

Yes your the customer, yes a portion of your money pays my wages, but I'm not your slave or punch bag. Just even saying please or thank you would be nice.

Precisely how I feel. I do like my job, really I do, 99.8% of the customers I have are great, great people, some are work-related friends who I treat special, and I've had numerous customer compliments to my bosses over my career. But there's just that occasional jackass that comes in that puts a mark on an otherwise nice day.

I've never been spat at but have been yelled at and a guy nearly hit me with his cane. (Because I didn't call and tell him a product he ordered hadn't come in. Granted, I told him I would call him when it came in and I gave him no specific date when it would come in, so I'm not sure why I should call to tell him there was no progress but whatever...)

But, yeah, some pleases and thank yous and even simply acknowledging my existence would be nice.

Countless times I ask people if I can help them and they give me no response whatsoever. I'm talking loud and clear they're the only ones there, they're just ignoring me. That's being an asshole. Oh and so is talking on the phone while someone is trying to serve you.

Keep in mind, that although most Canadians find Tim Horton's coffee to be like crack (thank God I hate coffee!), the chain consistently has the shoddiest service in the industry bar none. Part of me wants to believe this guy's just a jerk, but there have been times that I've wanted to scream at the incompetent boobs they have staffing these joints.

That must be a regional thing. The Tim Hortons' here in Buffalo, NY, USA are all known for their exceptional service and quality... especially as compared to their competition in Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks.

I get great service at any Starbucks I ever go to, whether it be here at home (Omaha, NE) or in New York when I'm on vacation.

That being said, I find the service almost TOO good, if you can believe that. Starbucks employees must be inhaling too many coffee fumes or something, because they are always so chipper and upbeat that they make me want to puke. They're worse than that annoying salesgirl from the insurance commercial.

^ I love that girl from the Progressive insurance commercial. She's so adorable!

Sadly, this is often true. I've always treated abusive customers like small children. They get one warning to amend their behavior and then they're hung up on, asked to leave or the police are called, depending on the situation.

One of my first bosses in customer service won my undying loyalty when he simply told a guest "I'm sorry, sir, but it's obvious that we're not going to be able to satisfy you here. I'm calling a cab to take you someplace you'll find more to your liking."

He also taught me another one that's served me well over the years when I'm approached by a rude person spouting profanity from the get-go: "Would you care to re-phrase that so that you get a polite answer?" ;)

One of the reasons Hubby stepped down as pharmacy manager. Loved helping his "patients" but not some of the "customers."

Seriously, when an older black couple feels a need to apologize for another black person's ranting--that's just sad. Hubby told the couple that the problem had nothing to do with them and he didn't generalize like that.

With customers that could not be pleased ("I don't like how that clerk looked at me" when she wasn't even looking at the person)--Hubby might give up ("Now I don't like how you're acting, either! The customer is always right!"), hand the customer a complaint form, spell his name out, spell out the store manager's name, provide phone numbers, whatever it took to get rid of the person.

On the other hand, for patients, hell, he gave one his cell phone number so she could call whenever she needed to correctly administer her med dosage. I didn't mind; it only lasted a week, but it was important to be done to make sure she didn't over/under dose and end up hospitalized (again).
