Yeah, calm down. Not everybody can like Japanese animation. Personally I love it, but I understand there are different tastes.

One thing I agree. Miyazaki kami desu. ;)

The images of the Yamato come up through the ice I thnk show just how animation has come since original was produced. While it could of been done by hand it would of probably been cost prohibitive.

Also point on the original - did they actually rebuilt the Yamato or was it used as tempate/cover? I seem to recall what was the wreck lying keel down on the what used to be the seafloor then the space going vessel blasting through.

Or am I wrong and what appeared to be the wreck the cover?

Oh no, not Miyazaki! You'd better run for it Dennis. A 70 year old man will be coming to your house to beat you up soon.

Jeez, a guy posted he doesn't like Japanese cartoons. No reason to take it so personally.

Anyway, I've never seen Yamamoto before, but this film does look pretty cool. I'll have to check out the anime.

If we end up at war with Japan again, we know who gets the blame.

    Thanks, Dennis.

So, let me get this straight -- not only do people in the entertainment industry care about what every single person says on random, meaningless message boards, but they can't handle negative opinions on their work?

Cool. Thanks. I'm not the huge fan of Yamato that my friend is so I'll be sure to forward these links to him.

When I watched Starblazers on channel 29 out of Philadelphia about 30 years ago, I was already at the age where I thought I had outgrown cartoons. And I have to admit, a lot of the show struck me as silly and hokey even then. But there was also plenty there that suggested a pretty serious sci-fi adventure show, better than most of the live action sci-fi drek one could hope to see on American tv at that time. I'll always have a fondness for it, even though I never developed a taste for anime in general.

Please note that Starblazers is a rather poor dub of "Space Cruiser Yamato"..many themes of death and hopelessness were cut out or glossed over in the American TV show..also some of the more risque elements were removed (nudity etc.).

I'm not an anime fan, but the flick looks like fun.

I find elements or whole shows unwatchable, but some of the best genuine SF of the past 22 years has been anime. Even going through an old episode of "Starblazers" recently (not Battleship Yamato..which I also have) circa 1974/1980, it occurred to me that they stopped to give some pretty good sci-fi explanations of hyperdrive and warp..Star Trek never did that.

Dude, it's so frikkin obvious that you used babelfish to translate what you wrote into English. Please don't embarrass Japanese people who paid attention for more than 5 minutes at school.

I mock your value system. You also appear foolish in the eyes of others. Past instances in which I professed to like you were fraudulent. I engaged in intercourse with your spouse or significant other.

And just as many Japanese (not to forget young people in the West too) probably find American animation quite lacking-in story, plot, and art. Might want to keep that in mind when dissing anime.

Well Farewall to Space Battleship Yamato would not of gone down well as the Kid's timeslot that Starblazers was shown for most of.

Think I'll have to track down the earlier ones and see if they have a slightly happier endings :)

Just watching some of the clips on Youtube brought back some memories.

Building the Yamato/Argo out of Lego and Sandor (as he was in Starblazers) in somewasy reminded me of Kerr Avon from Blake's 7.

I Babel Fished his post into Japanese and then back into English. It's much more poetic now:

Thought about running it through Babelfish again myself...this is neat. Wondering what a third time would do?

Perhaps Miyazaki is his he himself.

    Amen, brother. Amen.

I don't know much about Yamato since it wasn't broadcast around here (they picked Harlock instead but I'm not complaining) but I would be very interested to watch it.

And discovering now that the Yamato blasted its way through the ice, it reminds me that Leiji Matsumoto also did it with Harlock SSX (the second series) when the Arcadia, built in an underground cave, blasts its way through the ground to reach the surface. It was truly awesome to the eyes of the 12 year old boy I was when I first saw it, and I still love it :D

I found the long version, but with French dub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnSc0x6iEaE

    So basically they say:

    - Careful, power set to maximum.
    - Arcadia, blast off!
    ...
    - What's happening, what is that?
