Long delayed Red Sonja movie being released in August.

Hope everybody booked their tickets because it's entire cinema release turns out to be just tomorrow, one screening in a handful of locations.

I assume when the contracts were signed years ago they forgot to specify what counted as a theatrical release.

Regardless of the movie's quality, Sonja's story would need to be changed or treated much more seriously if the character were to become a movie IP.

Out of respect for common decency, I won't link to it directly, but The Critical Drinker's review is up, and, while hardly enthusiastic, it's more bemused and gentler than one might expect. He gives Lutz props for an effortful performance, but says the movie lacks the campy fun of a typical Xena episode.

It's like something SyFy would have made.

Well, I didn't hate it, and actually had fun here and there. The lead actress is just not very engaging, and certainly doesn't have Sonya's legendary physique, but she's definitely fit and athletic. The plot is fairly sword-and-sorcery standard. I didn't find myself fidgeting or wanting to turn it off. Good for a weekend afternoon (or evening) popcorn flick.
