Opinion please - a quickie freehand of cartoon-Scotty using no reference pics... i'm going to practice some more, and hopefully take a stab at a strip or two... caricature isn't my strong suit...

Looks more like Kirk. I think the main problem is the eyebrows and eyes. Also, I have never seen Scotty with a smirk like that.

I pictured Kirk more like this, square chinned for a caricatured animated look...

Scotty I can see being little bit less serious and more cocky - hence the smirk.

Even in this JLA style, I think you've got the shoulders too wide, at least on Scotty. Kirk looks about right though, if he's a Batman like superhero in your story.

Since you're obviously working in the JJ-verse, even though it's a caricature, it should still have the identifying features of the real person - less "superhero" body, rounder head shape.

I've actually just been sitting brain storming with my writer about a possible new Trek story set in the JJ-verse to publish on TrekBBS... this isn't my normal style, though I was aiming for less photo-real and more cartoon looking, but following more photo refs than not.

It's less a matter of photo-real as it is a matter of capturing the actor's - and thereby the character's - individual look. It's more about overall shapes and proportions rather than specific details.
