STO: The Needs of the Many cover.

I was just checking out Simon and Simon's website, and they've added the cover for The Needs of the Many. Here it is.

Ok, I just got back on to make the link and I noticed that it's credited to Michael A. Martin & Jake Sisko? So I'm wondering if that means this is written as an in universe book. Or is there a real Jake Sisko writing TrekLit? I'm assuming since it popped up on S&S it's the final cover... but then again we just discussing how accurate they are in another thread.

Huh. I would've thought they'd go with the box art or something similar.

As for the "Jake Sisko" credit, perhaps the story is told from "his" point of view?

^Well, the Path to 2409 updates had a few interviews in it from Jake, so there might be something similar going on here.

The cover itself's not bad - will need to look at a bigger version, which Amazon should have within the next day or so - although they could have done with minimising the number of fonts used on it: there appear to be four (OK, two of them are the STO logo, but still...)

^ Yeah, I was thinking the same thing (Path to 2409, etc.), because Jake is the focus of a couple of interviews, but so are other characters. He's the only "writer," though, so that's what made me think this might be a "chronicle" from his POV.

I have to say, I've only been what at best would be described as a casual gamer over the years, and much less so in recent years. STO is the first game I've ever pre-ordered. So much for sleeping in 2010.

I have to say, I've only been what at best would be described as a casual gamer over the years, and much less so in recent years. STO is the first game I've ever pre-ordered. So much for sleeping in 2010.

I have played it a bit during Open Beta and wasn't overly impressed, but I didn't really had much time and haven't played very far, so I might give it a try once I have more time.

^ I'm naturally very curious about the setting, and how they've done things differently than Pocket with respect to the post-TNG timeline. I have no problems with them taking different directions than the fiction, and I want to see "what happens next"

I thought the cover was better than the games cover but that's not saying much.

I only had a chance to get through the training sessions. The game looks great. I had troubles trying to fly my ship in battle but that's the kind of thing I'll get used to. Really haven't played enough to decide how enjoyable it is to play yet and I haven't ready anything of the back story. I'll read the book...

I guess MMORPGs aren't for me. I took a look at the gameplay video that was posted on TrekMovie today, and I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. I trust a novel will be more comprehensible to the non-gamer.

It's GREAT! It reminds me of when PJF wrote Venus on a Half-Shell and got Vonnegut to permit him to put Kilgore Trout on the cover as the author. I've often wished that someone would take a crack at Anselm, but that's a tall order.

There were times where I had the same reaction and I was playing, not watching a movie. On an away mission there were a ton of people around and there was one guy following me everywhere. I thought I had a freaking stalker or someone was hoping I would kill some bad guys so they could finish something. Turned out the guy was one of my crew.

I'm assuming it's going to be like every other MMORPG I've ever played in that it's fun to level up, well, depending on the game, but once you hit the high levels in order to do the really big stuff you need to be in one of those guilds that requires you to be on line at certain times for the big raids and even tough I can play a lot, I just don't have the life style that let's me schedule times where I'm there the same nights every week. And you get into situations where your standing around because you need a tank and a healer and the right combination of support classes or you can't do instances.

Oh, but this thread is about the book, not the game. Yeah, I'll be reading the book.

It looks like a modified Sovereign. The number is something like NX-81001. Googling that number doesn't turn up anything except a couple (literally) of fan designs. I'd imagine it's a piece of promotional art from the game, or perhaps a custom image the game artists provided?

It's a separate continuity from the other books; none of the books are part of the canon. The STO future diverges from the novel timeline in many ways.
