Whenever there's a continuity error I either make up a theory about how it happened or pretend that the character really said it differently or that species always looked like that (or something else to that effect). Some of the most common of my theories include "it's because of the universal translator" and "he/she remembered it incorrectly". However, I never explain continuity errors with "it takes place in an alternate universe". That would be too easy.

I drop my estimate of the overall quality of the episode by 2%. 5% or more if it's a significant contradiction, 10% if it's more than a mental "twitch" for me and more of a OMGWTF?

2% - Impossible navigational headings and such.
5% - Uh, Picard had hair when he was younger.
10% - Oh come on, reusing the BoP explosion footage from TUC in GEN???!!!???
