Films that sucked, but everyone else liked...

I'm 43 and have not seen any of them. Its not that difficult.

Given the circle I'm trying to smooch my way into, with a film producer who gave me his business card and owns an Italian restuarant, Strega's Ristorante in Boston, that plays a bunch of gangster movies (and where they reportedly shot the last episode of The Sopranos), it'll probably become a "requirement".

I'm Italian. Hasn't been a requirement for me. In fact many Italian Americans do NOT like mafia movies.

I usually love science fiction films from the 1950s and 60s, especially when they involve alien invasions, but I've never liked the original War of the Worlds. The design of the Martian war machines is iconic, of course, and there are a number of nicely done scenes. Including everything in the farm house, and the first confrontation with the Martian machines. But almost everything else in the movie is really, really boring, and both the leads are incredibly dull. The ending in the church makes its point early and then keeps going way too long, straight to the point of pure cheese. Outside the scenes mentioned above as highlights, there's rarely a sense that the characters or humanity at large is up against much of a threat. The fact that so many people think of this film as an equal of Forbidden Planet, The Day the Earth Stood Still or Invasion of the Body Snatchers baffles me, as a dedicated fan of the genre. Even the largely silly Earth vs. The Flying Saucers is more entertaining, and Pal's adaptation of The Time Machine is worlds better, yet doesn't seem to get half the appreciation outside of niche fan circles.

There are some very interesting comments here; I agree with a lot of them...

*Will Smith: I do agree; he does have mediocre films, even though he and his films are popular...(I support my brutha who is a 'black' face in primarily sci-fi--a place where blacks still need to get a foot-hold in-- but I would like stronger stories from the actor myself).

*Blade Runner: I don't know what Leonard Maltin thinks of it now, but I recall reading years ago that he didn't particularly care for the film. It's interesting to see some of the posters not really caring for it themselves...

*Superman films: The films ARE dated; however, if we look at the other Superman threads....the character has just had a hard time getting a strong portrayal onscreen.

I do agree with the poster (or posters) that Chris Reeve was the reason that the 'original' films worked...

*The Dark Knight: It was A-IGHT....(As the slang term goes...) I thought Heath Ledger was creepy, but the story? What exactly was the story....?

Hans Zimmer's music was kick-ass though...

*Austin Powers films: Only the first was good; the others were bad.

And a sidenote to SiorX: I am liking your avatar....:techman:

Damn. I walked right into that one.

E.T. A complete and total ripoff of Disney's "The Cat From Outer Space", but far less entertaining.

It's lovely, isn't it? It's a composite from four manips. All but Uhura are taken from non-Trek photos, so she greenified Gaila, and coloured the Amanda picture from a shot of Winona Ryder that was originally b&w. Beautiful work, IMO.

Star Trek (2009). I just didn't think it was a good film and have yet to discover what others appreciate in it.

Well, it was funny!

^While I don't quite follow the meaning of that graphic, the awesomeness of it is beyond reproach!

(blinks, and reparses) Oh, now I get it!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (what's the point?), Shrek 2 (nearly nothing was funny, especially compared to the first) and Friday Night Lights (neither good sports scenes nor characterizations) are the best examples. While not quite sucking, Finding Nemo and Chicago were ridiculously overrated, even Madagascar was overrated compared to how bad it was.
