O'Brien out, Leno back in?

If NBC didn't think they could lose a lawsuit for breach of contract they wouldn't be settling for $30m out of a possible $40-$50m(for a full breach of contract) AND allowing Conan to get that money and go to a competing talk show.

You would almost think it would be worth it for NBC to risk paying an extra $10m if they lost the case in court just for the chance to force Conan off TV until 2013 if NBC would win. Apparently they don't think there's that good of a chance they would win.

the ending of the lead-in was my favorite part

"OH!!! I didnt even see you sitting there Carson Daly!"

It wasn't just about the legalities of the contract. Conan is getting a great deal partly because NBC needs to put this situation to bed as quickly as possible.

Exactly, NBC wants this mess done now and now have a huge legal fight that they might lose, and would love in the PR department.

I don't get the Leno hate, really. He hasn't really done anything wrong so far.

I love Conan, but the rating was quite bad during his tenure, even before Leno started. And even if you don't like Leno: He had the ratings, at least.

Conan lost a lot going over to the Tonight Show. A lot of things dissappeared, and the rest was watered down. I watched the show over the net for a while (we don't get the Tonight Show here in Sweden, they ditched it when Leno walked and began airing the Leno Show instead), but stopped because the show was so much worse than Late Night that there wasn't any real reason to watch it anymore.

And if Leno goes back to Tonight Show - so what? I'm sure that he would make it a success again. And Conan can go over to FOX where the viewing figures hopefully doesn't matter much.

Because he will of course be third after Leno and Letterman. Hopefully more the "Late Night"-Conan instead of "Tonight Show"-Conan.

Of course, there is nothing concrete that Leno will go back to Tonight Show of course, but when have that reason alone stopped the nerd rage on the Internet?

Not in the beginning, and he didn't even have any competition. In fact, he had the #1 prime time line up to support him and still came in second for YEARS until he had Hugh Grant as a guest in July 1995.

But I think that have more to do with that Letterman was better back then. Nowadays, he's painful to watch, unfortunately.

Leno kept the ratings up even after the Hugh Grant-thing. That's the most important thing for the people in charge, after all. Do you think that this spike for Conan due to the "controversy" would have a lasting effect?

It helped with Leno. Expecting a new show to have the same ratings as an established show is insane. Should NBC have canceled Leno in early 1993?

Probably not, because they didn't have anything else.. :p

I'm not against Conan. I'm a big fan, but I do think that Tonight Show wasn't his thing, really. His have a different brand of humour, that doesn't really work on a conservative show like the Tonight Show.

I realised that when I watched about two shows with Triumph. The spirit was gone. The dog wasn't trying to hump everything that moved anymore. What made Late Night so good wasn't there any more.

Conan will land on his feet, and go on making a show somewhere else, hopefully more in spirit with the Late Night-shows.

I wonder what Comcast make of this, they are meant to be buying NBC (or so wikipeida claims)

On December 3, 2009, Comcast announced it will purchase a 51% stake of NBC Universal.
are they really going to invest in this mess?

you cant have twice as many ads on US shows, there would be no show left. Unless NBC goes pay of course.
