O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Does lead-in actually pull viewers all the way through the local news?
Perhaps not as much as it did in years past, before the advent of TV remotes and eleventy-billion cable channels, but yeah, there's Neilsen statistics on how many viewers keep watching NBC versus changing the channel from one show to the next.

Letterman's good. Conan is great. Leno is unbearable. Is he funny to the in bred rednecks from Jesusland? He must be.

Part of me thinks this whole thing was a ratings boost from the start. I had the same feeling when Leno premiered because it was the Kayne West mic grabbing incident which occurred the day before Leno started. I thought... this is incredulous timing.

Jay would be an absolute dick to take Conan's timeslot and if he does, the "Fuck Leno" campaign from Conan fans will resonate for years.

One of the best comments I read tonight was over at TVGawker. It was in response to the Jimmy on Leno segment. Person said "Great, now I like Jimmy Kimmel. Damn you Leno!":guffaw:

It's all but confirmed at this point, BC.

I love that Conan reinstated both that and the post-monologue chat between the host and the emcee. Conan and Andy aren't Johnny and Ed, but they're close. Certainly their banter has been more entertaining than that between Jay and Kevin Eubanks or Dave and Paul Shaffer.

Wow, yes exactly. Their banter wasn't very natural. Andy and Conan usually have me in stitches. Andy's always got something golden to say out of nowhere.

This whole thing is a giant mystery. All I can imagine is that some network will offer Conan and Andy something great.

Seriously? Then let the Leno bashing games begin. There's going to be a lot of heat on him over this. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a lot of disrespect from his own guests. It would be well deserved.

When people "retire"... doesn't that usually mean that they stop?

It's true that Leno got better ratings than Conan before all of this, and people can come up with the reasons for it, say that Conan needed more time, etc., but the really odd thing here is NBC's apparent assumption that putting Leno back at 11:35 will magically change everything back to the way it was. I really doubt he's going to just slip back into the number one slot.

I suspect it'll be like the early days, with Letterman leading most of the time. I wouldn't be suprised if NBC does everything they can to try to get Tiger Woods as a guest to try and recreate the bump Leno got with Hugh Grant.

Well I know SOMEONE who won't be getting a Christmas card from Jay. I thought it the session was pretty uneventful up to the very end when Kimmel practically blew up at him.

It was delightful. :D

Here's a link to Kimmel on Leno's show earlier tonight

Kimmel was great.

Wow. That was brutal. I almost felt bad for Leno. Almost.

I didn't.

Neither did I. :D

Notice that Kimmel really didn't "go there" all that hard till Leno took a shot at him.I think he was planning to play it lite up till that point, then the gloves came off.

That joke from Andy Borowitz was great:

"For years there has been a commonly held theory that Jeff Zucker has a video of GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt cavorting with a goat, and he has threatened to put it on the air," Borowitz said. "But I think this is a far-fetched theory, since Zucker has never put anything interesting on the air."

I think the intangible difference is that Leno's fans are a bit more casual than Conan's fans. Seriously, they are the ones barking and raving like mad before his monologue! Conan fans are a little nutty. And they're all poised to go berseko over this. And you can count me in! :rommie:

It was just pure gold and that last bit was right at the end and Jay was trying to wrap up the segment with just a multiple choice question and Kimmel just launched into it and Leno was just trying to wrap it all up.
I have to say, that's the best Kimmel's been in years. I really have to hand it to him for having the cajones to rip Leno to his face plus make it funny to boot.

Kimmel really doesn't like Leno. He's kept it civil between them for a while, but he's off the leash now.

Yep. You can see right where Jay throws in a little insult, and Jimmy's face changes, and it was on from that point.
