So how would YOU portray vampires?

I'd keep:
- Immortality (or more accurately, lack of aging)
- Regeneration (just a better healing factor than humans)
- Enhanced strength & speed (older vamps especially)
- Some hypnotic ability (older vamps especially)
- Aversion to sunlight (but it only hurts, it does not kill)

I'd lose:
- Morphing (stupid)
- Not visible in mirrors (stupid)
- Silver effects
- Garlic effects
- Religious artifact effects (such as cross and holy water)

Basically, vampires are real physical creatures bound by the laws of physics. They are harder to kill than humans, but very killable nonetheless.

It might have been better if Vampyress actually tried to take over the world, instead of just randomly vamping heroes and then going back to her crypt.

Vampires are demons, not people sitting around in Victorian gowns & Edwardian coats, sipping wine.

This is what Vampires should be.

* shrugs * I'll admit, I've never really liked the idea of vamps being demons. I think they should be a more unique monster, but that's just me. It just seems sort of like a cop-out.
Maybe , but we've taken it too far when young girls are finding it acceptable to have sex with them in stories lately. They're still monsters that kill indiscriminatelly to survive.

People will have sexual congress with horses and get excited at the idea of marrying serial killers - what the difference?

It seems that quite a few here would do away with the supernatural traditions and make vampires that are semi-scientifically plausible. That's interesting.

Easy.

When we see a woman falling for a serial killer, for example Dexter's sister, the audiences response was: "OMG, she's in danger!!!!!"

When Buffy was falling for Angel, who we discovered was a vampire and even by his own admission a Demon, the audience replied: "Odd but isn't it romantic."

The same audience had more qualms over Willow being a Lesbian, than the fact that she had dated a Werewolf.

I like the notions in Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula" books - where vampires have different bloodlines with different effects.

For example, vampires of the Dracula bloodline can shapeshift, but it takes great care and practice - the downside being some really unfortunate side effects.

Another bloodline can regenerate almost completely, while another doesn't have any powers at all.

And after a few decades all vampires become strong enough to cope with sunlight, though they don't like it.

Interesting books, really - kind of alternate history seasoned by a touch of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".

Agreed. Those are great books, especially the first one. I keep waiting for Newman to produce a fourth one . . . .

Based on all of the emo-Goth vampire stories running around out there right now, I'd portray vampires in a mirror. Oh, wait, they can't reflect. Hmm...perfect.:bolian: If you can't see them then we don't have to put up with the glut on the market(and in pop culture) right now. An excellent solution-I'm glad I thought of it.

I will take the vampires from Brian Lumleys Necroscope series. Twisted, dececptive, powerful, evil. These are my vampires.

Well, Buffy had the loophole of giving Angel a soul. As soon as he lost his soul, he became a villain, and Buffy even went so far as to kill him. Spike would be a much better example for your argument.

And yeah, she dated a werewolf, but a werewolf (in the Buffyverse) is only a monster 3 days out of the month, and they have no control over themselves when in werewolf form. Oz himself was hardly a monster.

I think what you show is a perfect example of condoning a sexual relationship with a Demon/monster.

Seriously, what type of reasoning is that?
He's only a monster 3 days of the month, so he's ok and Oz isn't a bad guy..........that's an uncontrollable murdering creature for 3 nights. How many people can a Werewolf kill a night in a highly populated area? Kinda similar too.........
A serial killer only kills at night, so if you date him during the day, he's really a great guy. How many people by day thought Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gasy or David Berkowitz were nice guys? How many people did those monsters kill?

Angel having a soul doesn't mean much either, he still has the desire to kill. Guilt is all that keeps him in check, guilt can be overridden. He's the equivalent of a vicious Pit Bull on a leash.............and leashes can break. Which has happened twice. If Willow never learned magic, who would've stopped him?

Vampires are the equivalent to serial killers, why is that in moderned cinema considered romantic?

Best vampires of recent times would be the Code Vs in Ultraviolet (The TV series not the Mila Jovovitch film) Plausible, just like us, monsterous.

Either that or like the Master and his kin in Salems Lot.

Basically I want them to be monsters. I don't mind if they're intellegent monsters, even if they're monsters you can sympathise with, but we shouldn't ever forget they're monsters.

Anyone seen Let the Right One In? Best vampire film in a long, long time.

The other thing I'd do with vampires is make them tought again. Seriously they're more fragile than humans are (this is true; I can stand in the sunlight, eat garlic, splash holy water on myself and hold a crusifix without bursting into flames)

Forget Twilight, I think Buffy has a lot to answer for. Don't get me wrong I love that show, but vampires were little more than idiotic, low level, easily disposed of henchmen most of the time.

As Willow said, she's not exactly a nice person 3 days a month either.

And once Oz realized he was a wolf, he had them lock him up during his changes to prevent anybody getting hurt.

Exactly. If you can control the monster and prevent it from doing any harm, I think you can justify it. What are you supposed to do? Condemn Oz for the rest of his life for the few days he can't control?

At least with Angel, yeah, Buffy fell in love with him...but nobody else trusted him. Nobody else really supported the relationship. If anything, I think the show displayed that it was actually a bad idea (we only saw it as a positive because we were looking at it from the perspective of a 16-year old girl).

Nosferatu looks
Keifer in "Lost Boys" personality
Sunlight? Flame ON!
"Garlic don't work, boys!" "Try Holy Water, death breath!"

It was good. That and Thirst.

But you probably have a hard time climbing up walls or continuing to walk after shot repeatedly.

Would you sleep with someone whos a Werewolf?

You heard it here first, folks!!!

Everybody has a fair shot.
Bloodsuckers, too the left.
Werewolfs, too the right.
Serial Killers, no waiting.

Serial killers choose to kill. Werewolves don't. I'd keep the person locked up during their werewolf phases to prevent them from doing harm.
