SF/F Movie Under $5 Million?

I seem to recall hearing that the director of Moon called in pretty much every favor everyone in Hollywood owed him to get the project in at that cost.

It helped that, IIRC, a lot of the SFX people didn't have anything else to do because of the WGA strike.

1.) Can a good Science Fiction/Fantasy film be made under $5,000,000 now-a-days?

2.) Briefly, If you could what SF/F movies would you make?(If you had $5,000,000 to blow on your idea)

I would hope so to question 1. and 2. I would love to do some sort of original Superhero movie or Time Travel story.

1.) Yes.
2.) I actually wrote a western/comedy/vampire script that could very easily be made for five million or less. I would probably say a lot less, actually.

That actually sounds interesting...my one idea is Time Trave/Western/Superhero movie. :)

The Stargate DVD movies cost $7 million and for the life of me I have no clue why.

Most of the cost probably had to do with the talent (actors, producers, etc.). SG-1 was a long-running show.

Also, they switched from using HD videotape to 35mm film, had a longer shooting schedule then they would normally spend on two episodes (about twice as long, IIRC), went on location to Antarctica, and hired a full symphony for Joel Goldsmith rather than relying on his synthesizers. Such costs begin to pile up, which only makes Moon's budget all that more astounding.

Who needs 5 million...

'The Man from Earth' was a fantastic science fiction movie, better than Moon in my opinion (which I also liked ) and I believe it only cost about $200.000

"The American Astronaut", a sci-fi / western / comedy / musical, was shot for less than $2 million, and it's bloody fantastic.

"Bubba Ho-tep" (yeah, horror, not exactly sci-fi) was shot for only about $1 million, and it's great.

"Cube" was shot for less than $500,000. "Robot Stories"....I'm not sure what the budget was, but I'm sure it was well under $5 million.

I hope so

The story relies on it more being a period piece...taking place in the late 1800's.

What? You think I'm going to put my ideas online?;)

Which reminds me, I do need to follow up on a film budget thingy....

Tks, for reminding me Jetfire....:techman:
