Green Lantern officially has a green light

Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) has snagged the role of Carol Ferris in Green Lantern.

Color me disappointed.
Me too, for tonight only. I have nothing against Blake Lively as an actress. She's fine on Gossip Girl (I've seen a few episodes). She's gorgeous, she has fantastic legs and her "Riverdance" thing is cute (if you saw her on Jimmy Fallon's show recently). But the character of Carol Ferris is an aircraft company VP, and Lively has played only teenagers so far in her career.

Whatever. Signing Blake Lively probably made financial sense for Warner Bros. A three-picture deal for some other "name" actress would have cost more. We have our Carol Ferris now and I look forward to seeing her (and Green Lantern too) on the big screen.

Hmm, that's a bit disappointing, but I'll hope for the best.

Edit to add: Clint Morris at Moviehole mentions this in his writeup of the story:

Though Warners were said to be after an older actress, Lively’s audition combined with her work in the upcoming Ben Affleck flick “The Town” won the execs over.
Lively would certainly look incredible as Star Sapphire if they go in that direction in a sequel.

Who got the job because she was the Boss's daughter, so I'm not sure where the age comes into it.

So to you, Carol Ferris is just "Daddy's Girl," and that's how she got her job at Ferris Aircraft. She doesn't have to be intelligent. She doesn't need a CV showing any real accomplishments. I hope this is in the script. It will be interesting to watch as Hal Jordan is bossed around by a woman who may as well come from modeling school.

No I'm telling you that if you want to be faithful to the comics then that's what you get. Ferris folded under Carol, she set up a small airline, it folded. If she's suppose to be a great businesswoman, there is no evidence in the comics for it.

Her greatest accomplishments in the comics was looking hot (if you like that sort of thing) in a g-string.

The actual details of her comics career don't matter. The movie is free to invent their version of Carol. She can be as brilliant and mature as the script requires.

Blakely was good in the TRAVELING PANTS movies, and funny during her gig on SNL. I'm sure she'll be fine as Carol.

I actually don't care how faithful it is to the comics, the impression I was getting from the conversation was that the film had to be faithful to the comics and that casting this actress wouldn't be that - and to my mind that's not a bad thing, which is what I was trying to (in my cack-handed fashion) point out.

However, for giggles, I would like to see the Guardians still be little blue balding men in dresses..

Ah. I got it.

And, yeah, you've got to have little blue munchkins ruling the universe . . ..

(Paging Deep Roy.)

And I hope the screenwriters have gone in that direction. Carol Ferris should be very accomplished for a woman under 30. And "accomplished" doesn't have to mean wunderkind like Tony Stark.

Yes, Carrol. Every superhero film of a famous comic book character, slightly alters or changes little things to fit the film's needs, and I think a 63 year old Carrol, in sort of a mentor role, would be a great idea.

Changing Carol Ferris from a love interest and (later) sexy villainess to a 60-something mentor would be more than a slight alteration.
