I'm happy to see Up in the Air doing solid business for a film of its size (given the subject matter, I'm sure it was very modestly budgeted).

Rumored to be $25 million production though am not sure if thats 100% accurate.

It is great to see the film doing well and hopefully it will do a bit more with all of the Oscar buzz around it. I definitely liked the film.

Crazy numbers for Avatar! Can't believe how well it's doing. I guess people really did miss Cameron.

Looks like Nine didn't open so hot?

But wow for It's Complicated--that's a pretty decent tally so far.

I'm shocked that Alvin and the Chipmunks made $157 million.

Why? The first movie made $217 million in North America and $359 million at the box office worldwide on a budget of $60 million and was the seventh-best selling DVD of 2008, earning over $100 million. Everyone I know who's seen it (with their kids obviously) said it was enjoyable for what it was. There were not a lot of family films around this Christmas, though I'm surprised the Princess and the Frog didn't do better after it's opening weekend. Word of mouth and critical reviews have been positive, that usually leads to a far less dramatic down-tick in BO receipts.

Just glad Sherlock Holmes is doing well.
While not the worst movie ever Avatar is not a great movie outside of its visuals which will have a lessening impact in the years ahead. The movie has no story to make it truly a classic. Shame really.

Up in the Air was a truly splendid film, so I'm glad that's doing well. That is a film which has 're-watchable' written all over it. Also glad Sherlock Holmes is faring well ... I'm hoping for a sequel.

With the totals they're on track for, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 are both a lock for sequels.

The success of Avatar is astonishing. Cameron certainly made a triumphant return.

Avatar has already talked about sequels and tbh to make even close to the 1st film he needs to pull out a TESB in terms of epic plot but this is Cameron were talking about. To be honest I so so so would love to see Cameron take on an ALIENS 3-D movie  oh yes.

I'm waiting for Up in the Air to premiere here, it hasn't yet, so that may effect its international gross.

And Avatar is just the kind of movie that if you enjoyed in the theatre you may well want to see again in the theatre; that was definitely my reaction. Most other films can wait for home video, but not this (though I will likely get it on home video anyway. I liked it!)

Up in the Air was good, but I'm hesitant to call it great. I liked Adventureland and The Informant! just as much this year, as far as dark(ish) comedies go.

Ah well. I was plenty amused by A Serious Man, although the film mainly gave me a sense of disquiet and existential unease. (I loved it so much.)

Best black comedy of the year I've seen, though, that was Inglourious Basterds so far. Hysterically grim stuff, that.

I couldn't connect with Inglourious Basterds for some reason. It was certainly entertaining, but it won't be making my Top Ten list (of movies released in 2009).

I enjoyed Adventureland a great deal but I also wouldn't put it on my Top Ten. For some reason I just really connected with Up in the Air.

I still have yet to see A Serious Man and The Informant! but they're on my list of movies to watch before Oscar time.

So now James Cameron is the first director to have two films that have grossed over a billion dollars -- quite an achievement. Still haven't seen Avatar yet -- the IMAX showings always seem to be sold out. Hopefully I'll get to it this week some time...

Man, it's been quite a busy holiday season at the box office. I'll be very interested in seeing what next weekend looks like, now that school is back in session and others are back to work from the holidays.

Oh, and if anyone's interested, I've been compiling lists of the highest-grossing films of 2009 and posting them in the Trek XI forum every so often... just to see where Star Trek is compared to other films this year. This thread seems like a good place to post them too, so here we are:

Obviously, some of these films are still making money, so these lists will change somewhat (for example, Avatar will certainly pass Transformers: ROTF domestically to become the top film of the year in both categories). Also, some of the foreign numbers are estimates, and a few might be a tad out of date, but generally, these lists should be pretty accurate. I also decided not to include films like Taken on the worldwide list, since it was released in 2008 in many countries outside of the U.S. -- which perhaps means I shouldn't have put The Blind Side there either, as it's only shown in North America so far... but I'm gonna keep it there regardless. :p
