Star Trek XI Action Figures

These figures were originally supposed to come out in November or October of 2008, IIRC. Makes me wonder if Playmates really had that much time to sculp these figures or even if they had access to anything more than early publicity stills to work from...

Well, they (and we) at least knew what the actors looked liked going back to the last half of 2007.
But we didn't actually see what the cast would look like in costumes, hairstyles, and makeup until the last quarter of 2008 though. Playmates may have cut some corners during sculpting to get these figures originally ready for the 2008 holiday toy season, IMO...

Yeah, but the biggest complaint is that some of the face sculpts suck (Kirk & Pike especially). The uniforms actually are pretty good and detailed (as much as possible on these figures), and the hairstyles are accurate.

I think the faces are probably the hardest and most time-consuming things to get right, while everything else is easier.

But then I also believe that Playmates really had kids more than serious collectors in mind with this toyline (especially the smaller figures and toy props).

Playmates didn't have too much trouble getting decent face sculpts for Generations (for the non-regulars since they obviously would've had those down), and that movie went from shooting to release in about 7 months, whereas there was a 13 month span from shooting to the original release date of Trek XI.

This is all just going back to my original comment that they did a better job in the 90's on the Trek line.

And yet Art Asylum is struggling for sales. If people like them so much, why is nobody buying? Come on people, their figures are cooool. Get buying!

simple....they have everything online, or are exclusives.
I say put them in normal stores. They did in 2005 where I am, and they were flying off the pegs.

Yeah, they've been releasing figures to Toys R Us for the past year, but they are releasing waves of three figures, with two usually re-issues of previous Kirk and/or Spock figures, and then a new figure packed 1 to a case of 6.

Stupid if you ask me since the only figure that is new and that would get collectors is limited, and then a glut of re-issued figured linger on the shelves.

I don't think it was the same situation. I think Playmates still had less time to do these larger number of figures well than they did the much smaller number of original figures they did with Generations. It might also have been because Playmates rushed to sculp multiple waves simultaneously for Star Trek XI (one of the initial "sneak-peek" reports described what are likely Cadet Kirk and Admiral Pike, which did not appear in Wave 1). Possibly too many figures to crank out in too short a period of time (wasn't there supposed to be nearly 20 figures at the 3.75-inch scale alone?). I could see how the face sculps would suffer if they had to do them all in a few months, IMO.

Probably because they used different sculptors and manufacturing processes back then. Given how much time had passed since they last had the license, that's kinda to be expected. Even Hasbro's G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures have changed over the years.

Yeah, they've gotten better.

The articulation and detail has improved since the '90s, but I think it's been hit or miss as far as face sculps go (especially with movie tie-in figures). They seem to be more consistent with non-Human characters, IMO.

I have all the six inch figures already, and wouldn't minde a second wave, just so I can get McCoy, Chekov & Uhura figures in duty uniforms instead of as cadets!

Just sayin'...

All I want is the Command Collection (12 inch ) Nero!!! C'mon Playmates........... Make it so!!!

I desperately want a 12 inch Nero!!! I own all of the Command Collection (12 inch) action figures and I want to finish the collection!!!

I think Playmates should work a deal with one of the big box retailers and give them exclusives on the rest of the ST items from the new movie.

KISS did it with Wallmart in regard to their new CD Sonic Boom, Playmates should follow suit. Wallmart gets the exclusives, ST fans get to finish their collections!!!
Easy!!

I agree. I got Kirk,Spock,McCoy,Scotty and Sulu in the 6'inch figures. And then in the 3'inch I have Kirk,Spock and McCoy. Im still trying to get all the others in both 6'inch and 3inch, but its taking awhile. I also have Kirk,Spock,McCoy,Spock Prime, and Sulu in the 12'inch figures. I was hopeing they would do a Scotty,Chekov and Uhura in the 12inch figures so I would have them all. Im trying to get all the doll size figures first and then get the smaller ones little at a time. The only Uhura I have is the Barbie doll verson, I alo have Kirk & Spock Ken doll versions as well. I think the 12inch version action figure of Kirk & Spock looks more like them then the Ken doll version. But I still got them because I love the movie and I love Kirk & Spock. But I still hope they release Scotty,Chekov and Uhura in the 12inch. Please Playmates, release those!

I remmber back when they were showing a promotional picture of the 12'in action figures, they had Nero in it, but Nero was the only one that didnt come out! I think since they have all the charcters out in the 3'inch and 6inch, they should've done the same with the 12'inch action figures. I was hoping they come out with Scotty,Chekov,Uhura in which they have them in smaller figures but not 12'inch. Im looking for those, so I know how you feel. I think they shouldve finnshed it instead of stopping it.

So tell me, is it 100% certain there will be no more Command Series (12 inch) action figures coming out????

Playmates is bagging everything???

If this is the case, then I am going to be super f*cking pissed off at Playmates Toys!!!!

^I think that the entire line is essentially canceled.
I hope not, I think they shouldve' finnshed with all the 12'inch figures. We don't have Scotty,Chekov,Uhura and Nero yet in those 12'inch figures. We already have Kirk,Spock,McCoy,Sulu,Pike, and Spock Prime out, so why not finnish it?:scream:

Because sales were so poor on all the Wave 1 figures, there's no financial incentive to make more.
