Good advice. I got my cat from the Humane Society when she was 2 years old. She had already been spaded and had a full medical record. Like a lot of cats she is aloof, and when I call her name she looks up at me then lies back down -- if she responds at all. But she's still playful, lively, mischievous and I wouldn't trade for any kitten.
That is one of the cruelest things that can be done. Local shelters take in unwanted animals with no questions asked.
I hope he gets double whatever he did to that animal.

Kittens are great ("asleep and crazy" is right
), but we took in three rescues several years ago who were 12, 13, and 17, and they were just as loving and wonderful as the cats I owned from kittenhood.
Cats are genetically wired to sleep about 70% of the time. With a free-choice dry food feeder and lots of fresh water, most will tolerate the owner being gone for the day -- as long as you make up for it when you're back together.
I'd recommend a scratching post wrapped with sissal rope.
Ping pong balls are great toys.
Cats puke because they groom themselves. The more you brush them, the less fur they'll swallow that needs puking up.
Claw-trimming is not scary, if you have a vet or a knowledgeable pet shop worker show you how, so you'll know how to look for the vein and avoid it. And remember the back claws, too.
Two people are far better than one when it comes to giving a cat medicine. Trust me on this.
Long hair, short hair... I've had a wondrous variety of cats. I have a good strong vacuum cleaner that I look after, and plenty of lint rollers.
Moving: We moved just fine with four cats several years ago. You might try putting the cat in one room with furniture or toys she's used to, so she'll be around familiar smells as she adjusts. Even our almost-blind cat figured out where everything was within a day, because I walked her around her new room, to the litter box, to the bed, and set things up the way they had been in the old place.
If you change diet, do it gradually over a week, to give the cat's digestive system time to adjust.
Cat person vs. non-cat person... even if you don't turn into a "cat person" overnight, if you're kind and caring and respect your cat, I think things will work out. I'm not a "dog person," but I learned to appreciate, and eventually love, big slurpy dogs after my dad got sick and his lab needed someone to care for her. We have another big slurpy dog now, and he's a treasure. I'll always be a cat person, but dogs are cool too.
Get in the habit of knowing the cat, so you'll notice when something is "off." A cat is the last one to tell you that something is wrong with her, so it's up to you to notice a change in eating habits or mood that bears looking into.
Yes, a good vet is expensive, when you take proper care of any pet. My husband and I joke that we funded two new exam rooms at our veterinary clinic. But our pets are our kids, and taking good care of them is part of the deal, no matter what. Our cats have all been long-lived (I lost the oldest two years ago, at age 21).
The worst thing about a cat? They don't live forever. I have lost three of my beautiful ones in two years, the last one just last month. I miss them all terribly. But that's because I adored them, and they enriched my life immeasurably. The alternative is not to have cats, and that is unthinkable for me.

It could be worse, you know. I could use "quotation marks" all the time, like Jack Kirby did in the "old days." or i could just forgo the use of capitalization entirely like ee cummings did.
I love cats, but you're taking a chance any time you get one. I'm fortunate to have two really sweet, well-behaved cats, but some of them are just nuts, and there's very little you can end up doing about it. But having a good cat can be very rewarding. I'm fortunate to have two that are just awesome.
Just wanted to add- cats may be a pain at times, but when they love you, it's all worth it.
