Do TOS Fans Like the Movie More, or Less?

Is your favorite Trek series TOS, and did you like the movie?

I love TOS, always have done since i was about 5 or 6 after watching countless re-runs in the 80s.

I loved XI. Thought it was great, fresh and upscsaled to a new bold vision. The scaling was imense, the ships were huge, the sets (work areas) were huge and looked functional. ILMs effectrs were the best i think i have ever seen. If brief, they were astounding.

Basically, i followed the movie from rumour to release day and loved it even more.

I like it yeah, at the same time as being a tos fan. Its not as if they went and deleted the entire original show or anything, which is what some people see to think.

I'm only 36- I remember the first ep of TOS that I saw in the late 70's- I remember going to see TMP the night before going skiing (threw up from the popcorn). TNG was a great creative way to CONTINUE the voyages of the Enterprise without buggering up TOS and thusly contributing to a history of the trek universe.

In that context, I hated the new movie. There are too many stupid inconsistancies to fit in with TOS timeline.

That being said- if I ignore my Star Trek knowledge and the CGI issues, and take the film on its own merits, then I LOVE it!

I'm completely serious- forget anything you know about Trek, and this is an awesome movie. I got it for my birthday, and watched twice in one day.

But I will never accept it as part of the continuity of the existing Trek universe, because it simply doesn't make sense- and the ship doesn't fit, and to be blunt, it doesn't need to be a part of the established universe- just call it a re-boot and everything is cool. ;)

Where I stand right now is that I am a TOS fan, with DS9 being my number two favorite having replaced TNG, though I am still attached to TNG emotionally. I feel that DS9 is more sophisticated than TOS and even has a good sense of humor but I am far more emotionally attached to TOS than DS9.

Voyager for me was forgettable, that show didn't make any sense in terms of how the ship was always in great condition when it should have always been low on fuel and flying apart at the seems. Everyone knows I hate Enterprise and I have explained my reasons before and don't need to here.

I don't know if it was more sophisticated if you keep in mind the context of each show's time period. Each had their nonsense episode, funny episodes, and eps with messeges. And each had to work within the sensibilities, and constraints of the day. It's all about perspective.

Dare I say that each series had their episode that would transcend their time?

And that leads me to the new movie. It's geared to what is working at the movies now. It's about whats popular (more so then the rest of the Trek movies). To do what was more popular, they had to do things that I personally found flaws in, but also found a lot of success in (evident in their box office take).

That's why this new Trek series has to stand on its own. It could easily have incorporated more things that TOS fans would have appreciated, and it wouldn't have mattered nor effected the story or new fans appreciation of the movie, but they wanted to go their own way.

I can't say that it's better because of the context. There is no comparing the old to the new. But I can't say it's worse, because it's not.

But the Real Star Trek timeline will always be the Real timeline. The new Trek is just fun, entertaining and should be taken as nothing more.

Christ, I didn't mean to go on a bloody lecture... :p

Neither of them is "real." Both of them are just fun entertainment and shouldn't be taken as anything else...

Loved the movie, felt as though the universe had changed after I left the theatre and the last forty-odd years hadn't existed.

Really, I felt strange.

Did you feel good though? Like you had enjoyed yourself and had something to look forward to in the future?
