The College Football Thread

Texas didn't win. Nebraska lost. Their punter should get his butt kicked for kicking that last ball out of bounds when they could have pinned Texas deep.

A-fucking-greed.

I couldn't believe what I saw in the last 2 minutes of that game. That was just really really bad football. I didn't see the whole game (So I'll believe the whole offense sucks on both sides thing) but that end was just awful. Nebraska deserved to lose.

Bama looked like the better team today. Tim Tebow, meet Adam Morrison...Blood brothers for life. *

*Anyone not know what I'm talking about, think today, and a certain NCAA Basketball game played in Oakland which involved Gonzaga and what happened afterword.

Texas wins as the clock runs out against a Nebraska team that didn't have an offense worth mentioning.

Do they deserve to face Alabama? Personally I'd rank TCU above them.

What teams have TCU really beat this year?

BYU and Utah?

Texas won a very ugly game but they won and their defense won. The Big 12 at one time for a few years was where the QBs dominated but it's becoming smash mouthed, tough defense again and that's the way games should be played.

BYU and Utah?

Yes, both of which are, arguably, better than any win UT had during the regular season, and as good as defeating a Nebraska team that evidently had its offense surgically removed before the year began. In addition, UT's OOC (a Sisters of the Poor slate that consisted of UCF, @Wyoming, UTEP and Louisiana-Monroe) is beyond pathetic, and yet, surprise surprise, they're being rewarded for it. TCU played at Virginia (which was a solid team when scheduled) and at ACC finalist Clemson.

I've seen them both quite a bit this season. In my opinion, on a neutral site, TCU takes care of the 'Horns ... and it's not a close game. Frogs, 27-17.

[For that matter, Cincinnati defeated Fresno State and won at Oregon State OOC. They also won at Rutgers, at USF and over UConn, WVU and Pitt—which certainly qualifies them for a BCS title shot over Texas.]

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending December 6th, 2009

1 – Alabama (13-0)

I can't imagine Texas will present the obstacle UF did ... but a win over Texas does not a JM1776 national championship assure.

2 – Texas Christian (12-0)

Ever more convinced that they'd handle Texas by at least ten points.

3 – Cincinnati (12-0)

With the weather, a hostile crowd and a team almost tailor-made to defeat them in opposition, the Bearcats found a way to get it done. Kelly just earned himself the job at Notre Dame.

4 – Texas (13-0)

If they beat Alabama, which they won't, then we'll talk.

5 – Florida (12-1)

In my opinion, Tim Tebow's legend took a huge hit. He looked, at times, quite ordinary.

6 – Boise State (13-0)

They deserve a BCS bid.

7 – Oregon (10-2)

If the Ducks and Ohio State both bring their "A-game," it's Quack over Buck, no problem.

8 – Brigham Young (10-2)

How did they lose big to Florida State?

9 – Georgia Tech (11-2)

All it took was an ACC opponent for the Jackets to regain their swagger.

10 – Ohio State (10-2)

I can see the headlines in Columbus papers after the Rose Bowl: "Shucks! Ducks pluck Bucks."

11 – Louisiana State (9-3)

This just in: No spiking allowed at Tigers mixers.

12 – Iowa (10-2)

Defense ain't sexy. Winning, however, is.

13 – Virginia Tech (9-3)

Those away unis they wore in Charlottesville were actually not grotesque.

14 – Miami, Florida (9-3)

If you hate the 'Canes, well ... you're not gonna enjoy next season.

15 – Penn State (10-2)

I so want to see Pitt and Penn State in a bowl game.

16 – West Virginia (9-3)

They just have RU's number, no matter the circumstances.

17 – Utah (9-3)

Did you enjoy Max Hall's diatribe against the Utes and anything remotely associated with them? They made him apologize, of course, but ... I love those uncensored moments.

18 – Nebraska (9-4)

If these guys had anything resembling an offense, they'd be 13-0.

19 – Central Michigan (11-2)

They're fun to watch.

20 – Pittsburgh (9-3)

Paper Panthers, it would seem.

21 – Oklahoma State (9-3)

I promised, so ... no comment.

22 – Arizona (8-4)

Hard to believe this Stoops has the better team, ain't it?

23 – Oregon State (8-4)

At least they didn't get blown out this time.

24 – Stanford (8-4)

Gerhart's a perfect name for a hard-charger, wouldn't you say?

25 – Texas Tech (8-4)

Really no bad losses this year.

Bad news for those of us who care about the D2 playoffs: four Grand Valley State players, including two starters (one is their all-time leading rusher), have been suspended for tomorrow's game.

Not exactly the backdrop I was hoping for when my Carson-Newman Eagles play them on national television tomorrow.

It definitely was an entertaining game today. A pretty high scoring affair. Carson-Newman played well, and clearly has a lot of speed. The weather definitely seemed to be a factor, with Carson-Newman turning the ball over a few times.

I'm glad Grand Valley is heading back to the national championship game again this year. Go Lakers!

Yeah, it was a bit ugly early on, but it turned into a fun game. I'd like to blame it entirely on the weather, but I know the players won't be. The size of Grand Valley's line was just too much, and that runner of yours is a beast. Kudos to your Lakers, I hope they take down the winner of the CalPenn/NWMizzou winner. Eagles will get another shot next year.

Can you believe that was the first time, in the 30+ years of their current coach, that Carson-Newman has played in a snow game? Ice yes, snow no.

Thanks for the kind words. I hope Grand Valley is able to best Northwest Missouri State next week. Northwest Missouri has the dubious honor of losing the most consecutive national title games, having lost the last four.

And that was the first snow game for Carson-Newman's coach? That guy has been around so long, I figured he'd have seen everything and then some.

A day later and I'm still so tickled that Bama kicked the crap out of Florida. Those sports writers with their heads up Tebow's backside must be flailing around like a fish out of water. Urban Meyer is. He checked himself into the hospital last night for dehydration. He's fine, but the jokes just write themselves. It's not that I hate Tebow, or took pleasure in him crying after the game, it's just that I got so damned sick and tired of hearing what a perfect luminous human being he was as if every other player in college football was average ordinary pond scum with average ordinary talent.

:shrugs: - there's little doubt the media overindulged in hyping Tebow. I think it's partly that here they have a genuinely great player and person and just plain couldn't help themselves. There are plenty of other notable role models out there, but Tebow was on the biggest stage of them all. 'Bama was so impressive yesterday thatthey reminded me of last year's Florida team - tremendous talent combined with one more year's experience and voila - great performances. I almost hope Ingram does NOT get the Heisman (no Bama player ever has). It'd underscore what a team they've been. The only problem I have is again Nick Saban.

Tebow's not that great a person and yes, the media can help themselves if they choose to do so. You'd think he was without fault the way the media carries on about him. There are other good kids out there just as equally deserving of attention as Saint Tebow. I'm thankful the Gators won't be in the title game.

Man, I feel sorry for Digits tonight. I don't think he's very used to seeing Southern Cal lose at home like that.

What an atrocious display that was!

I can't believe I drove all the way to Los Angeles for that.

Just....terrible.

Who's saying there aren't other good kids out there? You're over-dramatizing a bit here. The media have been bad but not quite so bad as you make it out to be. I can point to a mixture of articles on SI.com, Fox, ESPN and others where the opinion isn't so across the board praising him. Nobody is as wonderful as the media have painted him, but that's no reason to go so aggressively in the other direction.

Believe me, nobody has a greater reason than I as an OSU fan have to be glad that Gators aren't in the title game. But then I'd just as soon not see Alabama in there, either. Still, I recognize that they are two incredibly talented and well-run teams and leave it at that.

So, anybody else think that the Fiesta Bowl matchup is a pathetically chickenshit move by the BCS to keep their precious "elite" schools from losing to "lesser" opponents on a national stage? :scream: "Oh, but you gotta beat some quality opponents from the BCS conferences!" Well it's kinda hard to do that when the system is literally set up so that they can't. Boise State and TCU deserve a shot to knock off Florida, Cincy, Iowa, or GA Tech (obviously the even-worse Rose Bowl wouldn't happen).

Thanks for the kind words. I hope Grand Valley is able to best Northwest Missouri State next week. Northwest Missouri has the dubious honor of losing the most consecutive national title games, having lost the last four.

No prob. Although... ouch for NWMizzou... Buffalo Bills of Division 2?

And that was the first snow game for Carson-Newman's coach? That guy has been around so long, I figured he'd have seen everything and then some.

I know, I was shocked too. Apparently Sparks has coached in ice games, but not snow. And I loved the bit where he let them have a snowball fight instead of doing a walkthrough (even if it might have been a mistake with the way the game turned out) since some of the players had never even seen snow.

Amen. For the next month, I have become a big fan of the University of Cincinnati and (especially) the University of Texas. Nothing would make me happier than to see Florida end Tebow's career with two huge losses, and for Alabama to get manhandled in consecutive BCS bowls.

I could understand the irritation with Tebow if the kid wrote his own press or bought into it, but neither seems to be the case. Instead, blame the media and their fellatio machine.

An Alabama win over Texas would not convince me beyond a shadow of a doubt that they're the unquestionable number one, expecially if Cincinnati pulls a Utah and whups UF more convincingly than did the Tide.

If UT defeats 'Bama, I might still be inclined to consider TCU the nation's best team, assuming they handle Boise State with relative ease.

Frankly, any one of four teams might be able to make a convincing argument after the season's complete.

Pretty much the way I feel. I have my doubts that Cincinnati will be able to handle Florida like that, primarily because their defense just isn't consistent enough to stifle a Gator offense long enough. The Bearcat offense is more than equal to the task, even against a superb Gator defense that should have their most important defensive player back for the bowl. I will definitely be rooting or Cincinnati, in part because both sons now attend there, but mostly because Florida has had their day in the sun. Cincinnati has not, at least not to the extent of Florida recently. It's harder for me to justify rooting against a given team just because of that team.

As for Texas, if they beat Alabama I would probably feel they are the best, but it will depend largely on how well they win. TCU definitely warrants consideration, but if Cincinnati wins... they'd warrant it more than TCU as they would have more over quality ranked teams than did TCU. But that's a HUUGE if. I have my doubts to some degree about the Tide (a few narrow escapes this year), yet they looked more than impressive when it counted most.

How I wish that Nebraska kicker had keep his kick in bounds. Then the Longhorns would probably not have gotten that winning kick and there'd be mass chaos in the BCS!

To be fair to the BCS (the $#%! that it is) it is not their fault how the bowl shaped up. The Fiesta Bowl actually picked TCU the best team available at the time and Boise St the best school available at the time. I am sure the Sugar Bowl would have loved to have Florida vs TCU, but that was not going to happen. Would you have rather had TCU play Penn St. ?

The system is crap and there is no way it will be any good until they get a playoff, which doesn't seem like it is going to happen in my lifetime and probably never.

Very good point, Joy. The bowls themselves still have plenty of ways to muck things up, outside of the championship game. I liked seeing the Gator Bowl take Fla St and WVU, even if there are several teams that might merit an invite more than the Seminoles. Bobby Bowden is such an icon I think he deserves a little love like this. Still... I think Stewart Mandel pointed out that if there is any problem with that pick it should be directed at the ACC for the way they worded their end of the agreement.

So it's USC vs. Boston College in lovely Emerald Bowl!

It should actually be a fun match-up. I'm not sure where my loyalties lie in this one....

Well, you guys get to play in a beautiful ball park in a beautiful city. That's a plus at least.
