Monk - Mr. Monk and the End part 1 - Series Finale

And I feel sorry for Summit, New Jersey, getting an idiot like Disher as their police chief. They're doomed.

Disher is only an idiot in the shadow of others. The show established a while ago (and I hardly ever watch the show but I remember this well) that, when called upon to take charge, Disher becomes competent and confident.

It was kind of an anticlimax that after striving to solve Trudy's murder for all these years, he gets the answer just handed to him by a plot contrivance. It would've been better if Trudy's tape had only provided a clue and he'd needed to deduce the rest. Instead, the solving of the overriding quest of Monk's life was almost an afterthought and was overshadowed by the solution to the murder of a peripheral character.

Otherwise, though, it was a pretty nice wrapup. Although I was kind of surprised that it didn't end with Monk finally getting his detective's badge back. I thought that was as much a quest of his as solving Trudy's murder. Or did they drop that after I stopped watching regularly several seasons ago?

Personally I would have ended it with the Randy/Sharona as is. Natalie becoming engaged to Steven (after much more setup to the relationship), Leland retiring to spend time with T.K., and Monk not giving up his badge. In one of the final scenes, a Detective (or Inspector as they're actually referred to in San Fran) would walk into the Captain's office and give details about a new murder. The camera would then pan around to Monk sitting at the desk. The crime scene at the end would have had Monk getting out of a unmarked crown vic, driver's side.

I don't how I feel about the series finale. On one hand, I liked that they finally brought an end to the Trudy murder mystery, giving Monk some closure after so many years. I liked that Randy is taking his relationship with Sharon to the next level with him moving into with her in New Jersey. I love Natalie's relationship with Steve and that it didn't come out of the blue, the Monk montage near the end of the episode, and the scenes between Monk and his "daughter." But on the other hand, I felt the Trudy murder mystery ended with a whimper with the judge killing himself. And Randy becoming Captain seems a bit sudden though I feel that Randy getting promoted and the same for Leland should have happened seasons ago.

I just watched both parts back to back. I thought it was a pretty good finale.

The only thing is, they had to do some massive retconing in order to make it work--how long Monk and Trudy knew each other, for instance. I think it would have been better if they'd tried to work-in one of the already established Trudy plot-lines instead. (I was surprised they didn't.)

Disher is only an idiot in the shadow of others.
It wasn't even that, really. It was just a running gag they had, sort of like pick on O'Brien on DS9. The funny thing is, in crunch time, he was actually more of a "cop" than even Stottlemeyer.

Yeah, I thought Adrian and Trudy met in Collage? Could be wrong, I also noticed there seemed to be a change in how Monk learned of her death and what it was he was doing at the time.

As for Disher, he seems like an idiot, but he often comes through in the end. The thing I have, is usually the breaking up and moving on thing they do at series end sometimes. While it's a good idea, at times...bleh.

I enjoyed the finale.

I have to say, though, the part with Trudy's daughter was... strange.

Some girl wants to spend all her time with her biological mother's widowed husband? Um, yeah, whatever.

she's a kind person, it isn't all her time, plus, if you were adopted, wouldn't you want to know more about where you came from?

I recall from an early episode that Sharona asked the Captain about how Monk was before he learned of Trudy's death. He explained that Monk was smiling and telling a joke when Leland got the call and that, after that, he never smiled again.

If I were a beautiful young woman and some weird old guy with a loose connection to where I came from became obsessed with me to the point of wanting to retire so he can spend all of his time with me, I would be uncomfortable. :P
