Have you ever been turned off of an author's books...

Just to be clear, Card has argued that gays should be put in concentration camps, so it's a good bit beyond the typical day-to-day homophobia you might think Thrawn's statement implies.
WOW! Really? Now I did not know that. Do you have a source or a link for that?

What did he do? Never read his stuff...
His habit of including scenes that featured the hero getting a glimpse of a young girl's underwear disturbed me. Gave me the creeps. It was probably an over reaction, but its constant inclusion made me quit his books. They were getting a bit repetative too.

Yeah, that would be the Xanth series. I still buy those... I guess I have no problem with that series, although you're right, he is repeating himself. He did have another series of books, though, that I refuse to read. I can't remember the name of it right now, but the main charactor commits every major sin, all while trying not to commit any sin. That's where I had my over reaction.

I really looked forward to PA's 8th book in the Incarnations of Immortality series (the first book in that series for some 15-odd years), only to find parts of it a bit... disturbing. The older he gets the dirtier he gets. :wtf:

This one is his tirade against gay marriage:

I'm sure I've read that before, but reading it again, it seems even more vile than I would have recalled.

That's why I have no problem not giving him any of my money. I'm not burning his books or calling for his works to be banned but I'll be damned if I'm going to help him finance that.

There's a new book? I didn't know that. Which Incarnation is it this time?

Thanks for the link. I knew he was anti-gay but I never read his personal opinions until now. Certainly a tirade and some pretty strange ideas and theories there. While distateful to many (nearly half according recent CA vote) it apparently is okay to over half (same vote). The article is unsettling and disturbing but not quite the concentration camp view; although I will not be nearly surprised now if one is found.

Would I still buy a new Ender book if it was good? Yes (so far). Simply because his personal opinions, while twisted they may be, are simply his opinions. I had never directly read his crap like this before but I heard it was out there. His job to me is entertain me, that is it. He is not my political, social or spiritual advisor. My bad for subjecting myself to some other guys opinion. His Ender books do not reflect these opinions, at least as far as I can tell.

But I can understand if people do not want to buy his books. For me that is the same as catholics being upset at Dan Brown for 'The Divinci Code' for attacking their institution and the root of their faith. To me it was simply a story that kept you on the edge of your seat and was pretty good.

Google "The Hypocrites of Homosexuality" to read one of Card's earliest and most virulent rants against gay people. This is where he suggests concentration camps for 'teh gays."

As far as I know, he's never retracted any of it.

Under a Velvet Cloak - looks like it's about Nox, the Incarnation of Night. Judging from the comments on Amazon, I'm not sure I even want to give this one a read...

Not the author himself but the politics in Terry Goodkind's books are a real turn-off - "Torture by good people is good", "killing unarmed people is good as long as done by good people".

A very tedious read indeed. He is strong in his believes that LDS should have the right to exclude homosexuals from their church or at least to call them out as trying to change the meaning of part of the faith.

Although he never said anything as brash as putting homosexuals into concentration camps he comes close in stating that the existing homosexual laws should be enforced to the point of essentially pushing homosexuals back into the closet. But I see your point; it is similar enough to the idea of culling out groups of individuals and preventing them from expressing themselves.

Unfortunately the world is filled with groups who want to silence or trivialize another group. People who do not want others to express their sexuality, evangelize their faith, share their political views, shun other over skin color, etc.

I was surprised to see in the article that he did have homosexual character in a book of his. I never heard of Songmaster, but then again Fantasy is not my bag.

Wow, what an ass. I still don't think it would necessarily keep me from reading his work.

After all, would we stop watching TOS if we learned that a certain star treated his co-stars shabbily, would we? :)

Um, what? You're seriously comparing a guy who wants to throw all gays/lesbians/bisexuals/etc., into concentration camps, eliminating them entirely from society ... with an actor who has an overly large ego?

Thanks for the link.

I couldn't get past the the part where he says there are no laws against gays marrying because they have the choice to marry and have children with someone of the opposite sex. If that's your opening arguement, I can't believe you're going to have anything more intelligent to say later on.

Weak. Hard to believe the guy writes for a living.

I was turned off by the first book in the Thomas Covenant series. Not because of the author, but because of the main character.

The Gor series by John Norman, which started as a fun ERB pastiche rapidly deteriorated to "I cant read this crap!!!!!"
