I don't quite like Abrams' attitude

SW is all about special effects. ST was (at least untill recently) all about the stories.
And now it's all about special effects? I'm not sure what your point is.

without trying to get into a whole different can of worms...

i only meant that the newest film seems more like another cookie cutter FX movie, than it does a trek movie. but thats just my own opinion.

You know what grinds my gears?
That bit in the extras on the DVD, where J.J. (aka: Satan Himself) says that he "didn't want to impose a Star Wars pace on Star Trek", but in the very next sentence says that there was a pace to "Empire Strikes Back" etc that he really loved and he wanted to put that into Trek.
For crying out loud!!
"I don't want to do this thing, but I'm going to do it anyway 'cause I really, really liked the thing after all."
It's nothing short of the hijacking of Trek by a deranged Star Wars fan. Might as well just wedge The Abomination in between Clone Wars and New Hope and be done with it.
feh.
That's what grinds my gears. yup.

This is what pisses me off so much about the fan reaction to this film... people embraced it just because it's shiny (literally) and new, and worship JJ like some great prophet, while at the same time, they now begin to put down Star Trek as being boring, stale, and so on, while it is Star Trek that they have loved so much all this time. It must have been real shitty being a Trekker then, huh? Just because this film may have been enjoyed by people doesn't mean that Trek as it was was lame or boring. If you people who love JJ so much hate the Treks that started it all, then just say so, and admit you never liked Trek in the first place. Otherwise, shut up. You can enjoy this new film, without putting down the Trek of the past.
Ya know, I liked this film, but I agree with everything you just said.

Ditto.:vulcan:

And he was absolutely right to do so. The Empire Strikes Back had a pacing to it that none of the other Star Wars movies had, and it was a brilliant film.

We were all getting sick and tired of the Hermann Zimmerman sets and Michael Westmore aliens that we had been seeing since TNG started in 1987. People wanted something different and honestly I don't believe Trek XI is that much different, but it changed itself enough. Trek had to change or go away forever.

Yeah, it had to become The Dark Knight. Drama, fantastic multi-layered plots, and the right amount of awesome action...

Instead we got JJ's Trek Wars.

The very last thing ST09 needed to be was the depressing, nihilistic vision of a society on the brink of collapse that The Dark Knight was. The Dark Knight was a film perfectly appropriate for the national mood in the Summer of 2008, but ST09 needed to reflect a more optimistic vision.

In which case we would have you wandering these threads bitching about how Abrams turned Star Trek into "Battlestar Enterprise."

Would it gall you to consider that certain people have an innate bias for some reason or another such that any critique they might generate for this film cannot be entirely honest?

People can make comparisons between the new film and past treks all they want, and toss grenades at one another, but for me, for the most part, I'm good with ALL of them, though I'm into others more than some. I hate NONE of them..and to me, that's a pretty darn good way to be.

The kind of attitude I wish more Trekfans had.

Nowhere did I see it had to be depresing and nihilistic, I said it had to be good drama, and multi-layered plots. You can have that without being depressing or nihilistic.

No, I would not have.

Not at all, but I'm not one of them.

I actually found Empire boring....I have yet to be able to watch the entire film in a single sitting. Each Star Wars film, apart from the very first one, I have to take a break at some point because I get rather bored. And Empire's the one I get bored with the most. :borg:

Try the Riff Tracks commentary on the film its their very best one, despite the fact the film isn't a bad one but one of the very best ever produced!

I think JJ was right in his analysis of past Trek and think that his resolution by adding more passion to the film, depth of characters and their growth, and fast pace was great, though I don't expect the pace to be quite as fast in the next film he has already stated that in XII he wants to take the time to add more depth to the story that will be told as a reflection of those who said they wanted more out of the film and criticized it for having too much action. He does listen, after all he is very bright and conscience of the critics of the film even as well reviewed as the film is.

Yes. Yes it was. I really thought Trek was over for me. I could have never guessed that a reboot would bring me back, but here I am.

Trek was so horrible, it should have been rebooted in 1967. That would have spared us of all the lameness we had to endure until JJ Abrams came and saved us all. Now we have a cool and fresh Star Trek back, and our lives have meaning again.

I am probably just being a little slow right now but you are joking right?

i just watched Empire again today to try to find this "fast pace" but nope, seemed the same as always to me.

some of the best scenes of the trilogy do come from Empire, and there are a lot of different venues depicted, but as a whole the pace is emphatically slow, you find yourself looking forward to that screen wipe for the next scene before it ever arrives.
