Most famous openly gay (American) actor?

Neil Patrick Harris?

I can't think of any prominent Hollywood movie actors who are gay spontaneously, but Harris was in the spotlight a lot recently.
I didn't even realize he was gay.

George Takei and Portia de Rossi are the only two America actors I can think of off the top of my head. John Barrowman also, but he mostly acts in the UK and has duel citizenship. Plus he's not very well known in the US.

de Rossi is actually Australian.
I listed her since she does most of her acting in America and I'm sure she has US citizenship by now.

Speaking of actors who have passed on, Rock Hudson. Speaking of actors who are alive at present, I don't know. Ian McKellan is certainly the most famous openly gay British actor, but that violates your bit asking about Americans.

Rock Hudson was very, very much in the closet until he was almost dead.

But he did come out in the end, when AIDS was killing him. And he was very famous in his time. But, you're right.

The biggest name (one that people would call A-List) is Jodie Foster and the only one. Neil Patrick Harris has been open about it for a while, but he isn't consider A List (though possible better known). Ellen and Rosie are famous, but they aren't primarily actors.

People like Rock, Takei, Odgen Stiers are people that came out long after the heights of their careers. Harris is at the height of his career, Foster has been a serious name in Hollywood for over a decade.

B.D. Wong (Law & Order: Criminal Intent)-Will Du, his character on Kim Possible, is also gay, IMHO.

Mike Meyers (Austin Powers)-recently came out.

When?
Is mike myers gay?

I'm going to say NO that is he is not gay. Mike Myers and wife decide to end marriage Comedian married since 1993.

Is Mike Myers Gay?

The New York Daily News ran a one sentence blind item posing the following question: "Which divorced comic superstar is exploring a groovy new real-life persona: that of an openly gay man?"

From there, Gawker very confidently ran their guess, with the title, "Mike Myers: International Man of Not-So-Much Mystery." According to the entertainment industry gossip blog, for years now the Toronto resident has been "out'n proud."

The Saturday Night Live alum has an ex-wife Robin Ruzan, whom he married in 1993. The two divorced in 2005 with no children. Perhaps it took Mike that long to come to terms with his sexuality.
Or, maybe he caught a glimpse of Justin Timberlake's abdominal muscles and found himself uncontrollably swooning. The "SexyBack" singer tends to have that effect on the general public.

What is Mike Myers' sexual preference?

Isn't her possible bisexual orientation only speculative?

Nope she's definately out as a lesbian - her partner is/was (it's been reported they split) a film producer named Cydney Bernad.

Then we had Liberace though not an actor who successfully sued newspapers over reports he was gay till he came out the closet at the end.

Maybe I missed it but ... LIBERACE?

Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly. Way back in the 60's and early 70's.

See, I think that whole thing is incredibly funny. Today, we can view their shows on the Game Show Network, and they are both extremely camp. To me, at least, it seems obvious that they're both gay. Same with Liberace.

And yet, I've talked with my grandmother, who was around and watching these game shows when they originally aired, and according to her, no one at the time ever dreamed any of those three men were anything but heterosexual.

John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch)

I'm certainly a fan, but I don't know if he's a "famous" name. His stuff tends to be rather obscure. It's pretty telling that Hedwig and teh Angry Inch is his most mainstream film of recent memory!
