Star Trek Encyclopedia

dHunter333

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
i have had this thing since it came out, just dug it up in my parents house
the first edition
i recently bought the 3rd edition online
and it appears to be identical to the 1st edition....
at the end it tells what years each season of trek occured, and ends at season 5 ds9, season 3 voy (same as the first edition did years earlier)

i fail to see any additions.....it should go through the ds9 series....

i got it on ebay for cheap but still... ($10 shipped)

i know there is a computer version of the encyclopedia

i always thought they should put out a computer version and offer online patches to keep it up to date

after ent was off the air, and no new trek till very recently, would've been a great time to make an up to date encyclopedia

i see nothing new in this 3rd edition

what do the 2nd & 3rd editions contain that the first does not?
i looked it up on star trek wiki and it didnt really answer my questions....

I don't know what edition it was, but one of them had an appendix at the end which featured all the updated pages, which was current to when it was published.

Yeah, but the appendix was completely seperate from the main body of the text - it was basically the exact same book plus some supplementary material. I wish that material had been sold seperately, quite frankly, or if not that incorporated into the text proper.

Anyway, I remember the book with fondness - not too long ago it was pretty much an essential tool for Trek minutiae, though these days it has been surpassed by Memory Alpha (and I don't recall if there were ever any versions updated for ENT and NEM anyway). I loved pouring over it as a means to an end of compiling my all-so-important Trekish knowledge. Good days.

The computer version was called the Omnipedia, which I still have. It is way cool with videos, animations, and 360 degree views of various items.

sigh it appears i bought the same thing i already had
at least the old one was in real bad shape
got a nice one now

still i wish they'd make a new one, the encyclopedia is awsome, the timeline works with ent even and that show wasnt made yet
the writers/creators werent perfect but did a great job being consistent between all shows/movies
and this book details it all!

Of course, you can't take that with you to read while you're sitting on the crapper.

there are three versions of the encyclopaedia:

the first (black and white IIRC)
the second (colour)
the second-plus-an-appendix

there's probably never gonna be a newer version because Pocket don't need to bother when folks can readily access the same info for free on tinternet. IE Memory Alpha.

the second-plus-an-appendix.

It had to get assembled that way. The number crunchers in Marketing, IIRC, said it wasn't feasible to incorporate the new material throughout the volume because it would alter all of the internal layout - and yet the stores were asking for new copies to sell, so Pocket reprinted the second edition and added the new material to the end of the book.
