How long did it take for Spock to get to the transporter

Garm Bel Iblis

Commodore
Spock leaves the bridge, Kirk and Sulu fall off the drill, Chekov runs to the transporter room, beams them up and FINALY Spock arrives. If he'd RUN his mom would still be alive.

Okay you can rewrite any Trek movie or any Trek show to last 2 seconds if you want. They killed off Amanda's mom to make a better story in the opinions of the writers, just like they destroyed Vulcan, but adding his mother to the thing as a personal issue added to it.

Thats actually funny now that you think about it. On a side note, I wished they used the same layout as the original transporter room.

I enjoyed that scene, but being the nerd I can be at times I was trying to work out the mathamatics of Chekov getting to the transporter and working out how to lock on to moving targets, the answer I came up with was 'SPLAT' and the premature death of Kirk and Sulu.

As to Spocks mother, how come you can save the rapidly moving Kirk and Sulu and not a moving woman?

Chekov had time to lock on to and compensate for Kirk/Sulu's movement. With Amanda it was.. "Ok, she's standing still. Good, good, we're locked on to her, beaming up and.... OH SHIT! SHE MOVED!" And her decent was so so short/quick there wasn't time to compensate.

I'm sure M'Sharak can find this exact same topic from three months ago, where it will be noted Spock had to stop by the equipment locker and get a tricorder. He's strapping one on when we see him. "Clear the pad..." he's saying:

They wouldn't have been able to beam him down until they got Kirk and Sulu up anyway; plus, Spock had no idea his mother would be needing those couple of seconds. He just did what he had to. It was what is known as an ACCIDENT. You'll see that in the old thread, too.

I'm still amazed that Chekov ran from the bridge to the transporter room, caluclated the tracking beam-up all within the period of time it took Kirk/Sulu to fall, maybe -and being generous- 30,000 feet.

It didn't look all that far away though. Could even be on the same deck.

Spock bent down to lower his center of gravity and make himself potentially more stable, because the ground he was transporting onto definitely was not stable.

I didn't see anything shatter when Kirk and Sulu hit the deck, but it did sound like something did.

I know it's mentioned in this thread: spock and the transport

There was another thread from around the same time which raised the same question:

Why did Spock pause to chat before teleporting to Vulcan?

Best guess would be that he's lowering his center of gravity for beaming to a spot where footing may be uncertain due to extreme seismic activity.

And, on a side note, why did it look like something surrounding Kirk and Sulu shatter when they were beamed aboard?
Not sure -- I don't remember noticing this.

Edit:

Could it be residual transporter effects such as are seen in this screencap?

[Edit: Here's another cap from close to the same instant.]

Jinx, M'! ^ We answered the same questions, while you were looking up the links probably. Thanks for looking those up; you are amazing.

edit: wow, first week in June. Went back longer than I thought. Time flies when you're having a good time.

I'd already had the thought that this question had been asked before, and we've got a pretty good search feature here -- makes things much easier to find quickly, in most cases.

Yeah, that's it. In the movie, it happens so quickly, that it looks like something shattered when they hit the ground.
