The College Football Thread

So when is Carroll going to offer the offensive coordinator job to Marc Bulger?

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending November 14th, 2009

1 – Alabama (10-0)

From what I've seen this year, there's no way a loser of the SEC title game deserves a national championship shot over any undefeated except Boise State.

2 – Florida (10-0)

They're just not the team they were last year ... and yet that's still, thus far, been sufficient.

3 – Texas Christian (10-0)

Finally had to make the move: They're just more impressive and a more complete team than Texas; Utah, BYU and Clemson are arguably better than anyone the Longhorns have defeated, including Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Sorry, Longhorns fans; on a neutral field, the Frogs win.

4 – Cincinnati (10-0)

Survived WVU. Not sure they'll do the same with Pitt.

5 – Texas (10-0)

Still not quite sure what actual high-quality wins these guys have amassed. Oklahoma has four losses, and Oklahoma State can't beat a drum when it really matters. Texas Tech is a shell of last year's team. You have to wonder if A&M and Nebraska don't actually have a chance. Texas' OOC schedule is once again a joke. They do not deserve a BCS national title bid over TCU if both go undefeated.

6 – Georgia Tech (10-1)

I bet they're salivating at the prospect of laying the smack down on Georgia.

7 – Pittsburgh (9-1)

Not certain yet if the Panthers are for real. Their most impressive win is at Rutgers.

8 – Boise State (10-0)

The Broncos continue to fade, because they simply haven't done enough. They've one final chance to impress voters, if Nevada can win out to 8-3. Frankly, though, I think the Wolfpack has a real chance in that one.

9 – Louisiana State (8-2)

Here's another team whose OOC doesn't exactly sparkle.

10 – Oregon (8-2)

They're either shellacking or getting shellacked.

11 – Ohio State (9-2)

Wouldn't you just love to see OSU take on the Bearcats now?

12 – Stanford (7-3)

They've really come of age ... and let's admit it: That beatdown of USC was quite enjoyable.

13 – North Carolina (7-3)

They've defeated Virginia Tech and Miami over the last 15 days. Can't ignore that.

14 – Iowa (9-2)

They played a hell of a game without their starting quarterback. Have to give 'em props for that.

15 – Oklahoma State (8-2)

A top 15 team that's a threat at no time to win anything of importance. Truly frightening.

16 – Mississippi (7-3)

LSU will tell us whether they're contender or pretender.

17 – Penn State (9-2)

Their marquee win is Temple. That's no longer a joke, with the Owls at 8-2.

18 – Brigham Young (8-2)

They looked terrible against New Mexico, and their game against Utah is both teams' last chance to salvage their respective seasons, each having been humiliated by TCU.

19 – Virginia Tech (7-3)

And they started out with such high hopes, too.

20 – Clemson (7-3)

No longer sure whether the Hokies' loss to 'Bama is higher quality than the Tigers' to TCU.

21 – Rutgers (7-2)

USF talked shit all week about how they'd humiliate the Knights in front of the Piscataway crowd, thus taking revenge for the 49-16 disaster in Tampa last year. Turned out to be the usual Bulls' shit, as RU crushed them again.

22 – Wisconsin (8-2)

Would 10-2 get them a BCS bid? Thankfully, not a chance.

23 – Miami, Florida (7-3)

Corso predicted that a Georgia Tech win would mean a 'Canes' loss. The coach was time on target.

24 – Nebraska (7-3)

It'd be great if they could knock off Texas in the Big 12 title game.

25 (tie) – Utah (8-2)

They've still won like 23 of their last 25 games.

25 (tie) – Southern California (7-3)

I would have relished dropping them out, but the win at the Horseshoe still gets them some love. Clearly, though, their spirit's been broken.

25 (tie) – Navy (8-3)

These guys give everyone trouble. Just ask Ohio State, whom they should have beaten, and Notre Dame, whom they did.

Yesterday worked out nicely for me. Oregon won and both Arizona and USC lost. The only way it could have been better would have been for OSU to lose to Washington as well.

Congrats on Ohio State getting to the Rose Bowl Neroon! I had my doubts for a while but the Buckeyes proved me wrong.

Ugh I couldn't stand seeing people in the stands with roses in their mouths before the game was even close to over. I really wanted Iowa to win so they'd feel like douches.

Penn State...ugh. Clark can make such terrible decisions - couple times he ignored a wide open player in favor of throwing into double coverage. Also, the special teams truly can be "special." They did pick it up, but 3 TO's in the first QUARTER???!!!

Blahhhh. I was pretty frustrated with Auburn's performance, although at least I felt like it was a more even matchup than some of the other games we've been in. The problem was we did ourselves in with our sloppiness.

One question, though--has anybody heard how that Georgia kid is doing, that had to be carted off the field? That didn't look good. :(

(Oh...and the Ohio fans actually put roses IN their mouths? I have no idea how anybody could stand the taste!!! :cardie:)

Every team's fans do that or something very similar to it, mimic. Personally, I don't care for it because it too often looks overconfident. Still, it's a pretty wide-spread activity that schools from so many conferences do it. Plus, it's probably more the fault of local florists trying to get some publicity out of it, as opposed to a pre-mediated act by the fans.

It was a concussion, no broken bones. Apparently he was kept overnight for observation but returned to the team this afternoon. No word on whether he will play next weekend or not.

We didn't do it last year. In the fourth quarter with the game in hand the players got roses, but not the fans.

Even so, it happens often enough around the country that you can't ascribe the criticism to just one group of fans. If people are passing out free roses, how many folks are going to turn that down? I honestly wouldn't have been waving one around, because I am the supreme worrywart. Iowa bears me out this time around. However, I just don't think it's that big of a deal.

Hmmm... which makes Michigan fans - not to mention players - even worse, I guess......

Glad to know he's better. :)

And nobody's answered my previous question...the Ohio fans actually put roses in their mouths? How the hell did they stand the taste? I STILL can't forget when I was little and I stuck my hands in my mouth after handling dandelions or grass. Nastiest taste EVER, damn near impossible to get rid of.

With Oregon State making the cut this week Oregon once again has two Top 25 programs in all four polls. Not too shabby.

Yes, they did. Fans have been doing that for years and will probably continue to do so. I fully expect to see the same thing when a PAC-10 champion is decided.

Gross. Almost makes me want to spit just thinking about it.

I often have that response when thinking about Ohio State.

Still, I must admit, Neroon ... Beanie Wells has proven to be quite the stud. Since he's now an Arizona Cardinal, we have graciously decided not to hold his Buckeyes past against him.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

LOL...well, I'm not too passionate one way or the other about Ohio State unless they happen to be in Auburn's way in the rankings. (That is, provided we're actually in the running. Oh well, maybe next year...)

Depending on what happens this weekend, the PAC-10 could end up with a six-way tie for first! :wtf:

Man oh man... that would be fantastic! Okay.... what DOES have to happen, Mal?
