The Doctor Who Ultimate Monster Guide (Justin Richards)

It's coming out in two weeks here in Canada so that means none of the fucking Chapters will have any copies for a few weeks after that. It appears that it is a compilation of his previous Monster Guides??? With updates through to current Who. I'll be buying it if it's in the comic shop this week. I saw it on the solicitations list so here's hoping.

Still am waiting for Chapters to get this in...it's going to be annoying waiting for this book to come in. Does no one like coffee table books here or just not interested in them? Every year when a big hardback comes out and I post about it...no one replys heh. Also I noticed that RTD has an expanded paperback version of his book coming out in Jan.

I've only seen RTD's book for sale once in a store here in Alberta -- one of the Warp Comics locations in Edmonton. I've never seen it at Chapters or Indigo. When the new version comes out (it's a paperback edition with 300 pages of added material ) I'm probably just going to order it automatically from Amazon and not even bother checking the stores here.

There does appear to be a bit of a backlash on coffee table books. I know used bookstores that won't take them because they don't sell. But this is Doctor Who we're talking about, so you'd think they would.

I prefer patronizing real stores whenever possible. It keeps people employed and it keeps the stores open, thereby giving me some place to go and look at stuff. But more and more in the last 3 years, for books, comics and definitely CDs, I've had to turn to the Amazon option. I hate it (in spite of the usually cheaper prices) but if the stores won't -- or in many cases can't -- bring in a product (anyone try finding a store carrying a DVD copy of the Watchmen Ultimate Cut that came out a couple weeks ago?) I have no choice but to order it over the Net. As may have to be the case with the Monster Guide. I know I had to order all the Darksmith Legacy books through Amazon because none of the Chapters or Indigos bothered to bring them in.

Yeah Chapters has been really bad lately with their shipments of new books...especially overseas stuff like Doctor Who. The revised visual guide took a month or so and they only had one copy of it which I snatched up quickly as soon as I saw it.Still waiting for the Monster Guide, I have a feeling that I'll probably have to order it online along with the Torchwood Encyclopedia that comes out later next month as well.

Well to my surprise Chapters had two copies in when I stopped in there last week so I decided I would flip through it and i was impressed. It's just not a guide but also a partial behind the scenes book at make up and conception of the monsters and aliens that have been in Who. It covers all eras of the book, and has episode synopsis of the major aliens and their appearence. It has nice DK style splash pages on Davros, the Dalek Emperor, and The Master. The best part was that it was stamped with a $19.99 price so I'm going in to pick it up next week when I finish my Christmas shopping.
