8. Much better than last week. But, wow, what a downer. This was too dark for me. On its surface, it appears to be good dramatic material. But, the characters don't really solve the problem. They all die, sometimes multiple times. Fortunately, they have enough redos so that eventually they can get it right. I don't think they learn anything from it because none of it ends up happening.

Next week it appears we're back to the Earth soap. Blah!

Mr Awe

Well, each time they fail, there's a new kino on the floor by the gate.
So they would at least have seen the original iteration on the kino.

I never rate the episodes with a number, but I always love putting in my two senses.

Unfortunately, the episode, no matter how good it was in its own right, suffers from current TV conventions. Of course they will never kill of half the main cast nor will they stop using the reset button. I understand that and though this episode did not shock me, I took it as an hours diversion.

My mom told me when she watched the pilot that Louis Ferreira (sp?) (Col. Young) was in another series she watched and was horrible in it. With the exception of last episode, he doesn't inspire me as a leader or an actor. Even his death scene was horrifically acted.

Luckily, Ferreira is outacted on the poor scale by Elyse Levesque as Chloe. She has to be one of the worst actresses I think I've ever seen. I will never understand ensemble casts with members who have nothing to add to the story on a weekly basis. Just because it isn't her show this week doesn't mean that she must be reduced to pining over Scott and being a whiny little child.

One thing I am happy about is the following up on the line "These are the wrong people for this." All one needs to do is look at Spencer or "Mr. Clean"

They really should have kept Chloe dead. It would have been a nice touch.

Once again, nobody bothers to use the stones to get somebody with some medical expertise onto the ship. We have to settle for a medic dealing with an alien contagion.

I think folks should give it a bit more credit.

This was written and executed a few times better than the typical time loop / alternate reality reset button episode. It was dark, but importantly, dark in ways Stargate hadn't done before. In fact, this wasn't even BSG dark. This is almost something new.

The bit where we watched Eli's corpse pushed up with the Kino still recording was one of the most unsettling moments I've seen in any tv program. Executed perfectly, with a moment's uncertainty over whether Eli was merely unconscious or dead. Then the last survivor's freak out; chilling.

Personally, I would say this was genuine horror.

Also, SGU has been excellent so far about continuity of details. I would not write off the events of this episode as a simple reset. Don't be surprised if the fact that the "successful" crew has the recording of their last failure comes back to haunt. They've just gotten it hammered in that they could all be wiped out by factors coming at them from right angles such as the water they'd already taken for granted.

Also, good point: would each Kino from a prior failure be collected there? Would the crew that makes it out alive find a pile of 10 Kinos? If it turns out they see the recordings of each of their failures, there you go; that development wasn't lost.

Well, the new Kino was sent somewhat earlier (Lt. Bangs-a-lot sending it out just as the solar flare began), so that might indicate that the Kino would be sent back farther in time than the previous kino. A whole new timeline would be created with the new kino, and we wouldn't even have Rush's body on the planet (let alone a second kino).

On the other hand, the kino could have been sent back to a time right after rush and the first kino were sent. This seems less likely because Rush's body was already on the planet when the first kino arrived in the past (indicating an earlier jump through the gate in the future would lead to an even earlier arrival in the past).

My guess is that only the latest kino would be found.

9 chevrons.
- Great stuff, and an unusually well done time travel episode.
- Great surprise/WTF moments.
- Rush's response to "How could it get any worse?" - "I’m afraid that’s a failure of imagination" :D :D
- Great character moments. Sure, all of them will not be remembered by the crew, but the point is that *us viewers* got to understand the characters better.
- Extra bones points for the unconventional ending! Unusual for an SG episode, but we did not need to have the rest spelled out.

I predict that future viewers (watching in syndication) will frequent this board to ask the question, "What happened to the second half of this episode? Why did they skip to an episode involving body swaps?"

I'm interested in what Rush had to say about the ancients and ascension. It could be nothing more than a "spiritual" belief of sorts, but it could also be something else. Maybe we got a glimpse into his ultimate plan. Maybe he wants to use ascension/ancient knowlege to get his dead wife back.

Okay, it's a time loop with a reset button. As Kaijima said, it was a time loop done really, really well. If there are no truly new plots, what matters is the execution, and this one was, from my perspective, very well done. Great stuff from Eli and Rush, and a good lesson in how close they are to death at any given time. Also, I'm always glad to see a depiction of dangerous contagions coming through the gate; SG-1 portrayed this a couple of times, but they were always waay too lax with precautions, which always pissed me off. This is a nice change.

They could have changed things up by actually having the balls to kill off people and then have a debate on the ship about whether or not they should try to change history.

Although, at that point, I have to imagine that they'd just have Scott run off to the planet and try to change time himself. But just once, it'd be nice if people in this universe were a little more responsible with manipulating time.

I mean, even Kirk didn't fly around the sun when David died... He only did it when he needed some whales! :p

I don't mind reset buttons if we're given a chance to explore avenues that aren't compatible with the rest of the series. Things like watching Eli mourning the death of Chloe give an opportunity for the actors to break out a little bit and explore a bit more range.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode quite a bit. Especially the end. No need to insult anyone's intelligence by showing the solution implemented.

Exactly, Reset buttons aren't all bad and I enjoyed this one. As for not killing people off for godsake they can't cull too many people they need a crew around for a possible 4-5 season show and were 8 episodes in to a potential 80-100 episodes. I am sure there will be deaths as the season continues but the major characters are not going to get knocked off something called a contract which they all signed and Skiffy/MGM are not going to wack some now who probably signed a 3/4 year deal cause killing them won't mean they don't get a contract paid up. You can't call the writers on this one, no show kills off is established main cast after 8 episodes and you may say stuff like LOST & Angel (doyle) but am pretty sure those actors weren't given long contracts.

I came on this baord after the show and thought i would find a 3 to 4 page commentary thread, but there was nothing at all, weird.

I thought that one night, but people must have all watched it on recorders. The thread got much larger the next day.

Sorry guys, i've been pretty sick lately, I wasn't up to working a thread and watching it live tonight, been away from the computer all day, but I did watch the episode.

So, basically, all the character building and growth we just had in this episode was all reset and washed away. I absolutely hate that. I hate resets. Blah

Other than that major plot I disagree with, the action was kind of good, and I liked the twist about the infection coming from the water they got on the ice planet, good little twist there, didn't see that coming.

They should have let the episode end with the first Kino time travel thing, they could have had a few people die, get very emotional and re-write it so Chloe and the main cast didn't die of course, but just some extras and maybe one semi-regular person we've seen, and leave the episode with that, them finding the cure, but having to live with the fact that getting water from the ice planet cost them lives on the ship. What a thing that would have been to have to live with, and would have make this episode A+. How it stands, with the reset, it gets a C at best.

I almost wept when Lt. Titties died. Then Chloe died and I knew it would be the big reset for everybody.

The ratings have been dropping for the show down to 1.7 million at last count though DVR numbers are really solid, SKIFFY 8pm ffs 8pm not 9pm. Remember when SG-1 was on at 8pm and its numbers were always above 2 million and then skiffy went for the 9-11 SG-1/SG-A slot and ratings went down but DVR went up  People even SCI FI fans do go out you know Skiffy so choosing the earliest possible primetime slot might help.

Looks like they need more water again.

If they added the ice to their existing water supply, it's all tainted. I suppose they can add the venom to the water to kill the infection, but who knows what long term consumption of the venom would do?

They really need to find a paradise planet where everything they need is available. Then they can move away from the out-of-everything stories and do something else for a while.

Yes, I was genuinely shocked when I thought they actually knocked Lt.T off. Then Chloe died and I thought, "wow, daring!". When the away team started dying, that's when I finally caught on the button was coming.

Stargate: Alien.

Bit of a fanficish episode, to be honest. I enjoyed, that's all that matter but still really weak writing.

Re: SG-U

They really need to find a paradise planet where everything they need is available. Then they can move away from the out of everything stories and do something else for a while.

The problem is that Destiny is not Voyager and they are not moving towards home no matter how slowly. There have been three near mutinies. If they encountered such a planet the show becomes Earth 2 with a smaller colony and there are no Cylons around for the people to go suicide bomber against.

I'd have to go back and rewatch, but was it already established that they can bypass the FTL countdown by someone "holding the door" on the 'gate?

I liked how the episode actually felt like a Stargate episode, for the first time in the series. Action, adventure yippee.

But I hated the reset. It is a cheat of the worst sort. "Hi my name is Robert Cooper, and this is what I would like to do to my characters, but I'm too afraid to leave them like that." BOOP RESET.

Ultimately I'm just annoyed at the premise of the show itself, all drama and ongoing arcs have to be aboard ship or back on Earth and honestly the Stargate writing staff have not made those arcs exciting or interesting. We can't really explore any planets or have any excitement on the planets we visit, because the bus on our guided tour of the galaxy is leaving shortly.

But I'm sure that will change in future episodes.
