911 -- what's your emergency?

Someone broke into my truck and stole my pot!:

Man calls 911 'cause his drugs were stolen after his vehicle was broken into. IF only it was this easy with every criminal.

I find it odd that they're able to charge him with possession for simply reporting that he had some and it had been stolen. I thought they actually had to find it on your person or property for that to work.

Maybe he was given a choice between a charge for possession or for filing a false report.

No, you have to prove possession - granted, hard to do without those two things, but if you ring up 911 and admit to it, sorted.

It's a bit like drink driving - people think you have to breathalyse because that is the most common method - but its like any other offence - if you show beyond a reasonable doubt using another method that they were intoxicated, you're done.

Hmm... because I'd always heard that you could admit to being high or to having smoked pot recently to a cop without fear of legal penalty. Perhaps I've been misinformed... or perhaps it varies state-to-state, country to country, and depends on the disposition of the particular cop.

*A-hem* The officer's "discretion". Then again, it could depend on the arresting officer's "disposition"

Well legally he could then charge you with possession, but his word that you said it to him isn't exactly going to be stunning evidence in court - so in reality, yeah, you're fine. But you ring 911, all calls to which are recorded, and admit to it... different story.

"911 -- what's your emergency?"

"I'm horny."

Once again, I think we're all left scratching our heads. Especially if you read why he called them.

I've been in over a dozen jails... installing enhanced 911 equipment.

The nature of most 911 calls has nothing to do with saving life or property, but inane stuff like this, asking for the time, the number for the movie theater, etc, etc etc.
