ENT-10 year mission?

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I trying to get my ENT chronology together....

Is it true they were in space for 10 years? (From the time of Broken Bow to TATV where Archer is to give his speech for as Federation President?)

That's what's implied during the opening dialogue of "There Are These Voyages..."

Mayweather begins that show by saying to Hoshi, she'll find it hard going back to teaching in Brazil again after 10 years on the ship.

In the novels, the accuracy of that holodeck recreation of 2161 is called into question. But it's probably a safe bet that was the final year the NX-01 spent in regular service...

In terms of onscreen canon, that length of time is what we're left with at any rate.

And that time frame, with Hoshi and Travis stuck at ensign for that long, makes VOY's Harry Kim's 7-year stint as ensign look good in comparison! -- RR

Oh yeah, that bugs me... as it makes main characters look workshy or reluctant to take on more responsibility. You kind of assume everybody wants to progress through the ranks.

Of course, from a drama point of view... fans can easily come up with possibilities... where Mayweather was promoted, only to be busted back down. Say choosing to put friendship above obeying orders in the Romulan War. It came close to that kind of situation early on in Shuttlepod One between Trip and Reed.

That is interesting...(I would think Hoshi and Travis would be at least Lt. Commander's, Reed a full Commander or even a Captain....with T'Pol and Archer having risen in rank or responsibilities).

Hmmm, I'll have to read the novel...but I do agree that is a plot hole that one may wonder about...;)

Well, it wouldn't be just Mayweather, but Sato, and Reed....who are still the same rank; and then there is a question of why Archer and T'Pol 'moved up' and the other three are still holding their same ranks...

I do agree there could have been something that occurred that had them busted back down to their former ranks...

(One of those things that fanon can try to figure out).

If they had more ranks like the other shows they could have moved up. Reed could be Lt. Cmdr and Hoshi and Mayweather could at least be Lieutenants.

Maybe the mission was intended to be longer, but the decision to put Enterprise in mothball shortened it's mission which conveniently makes it so that the Enterprise doesn't become a Federation Starship.

To your first point, I agree. That time frame would certainly be enough time for Travis and Hoshi to have been promoted two grades, and Reed to at least have been promoted one grade. -- RR

As I understand it, TATV was originally a second-season script that they couldn't get made for various reasons, supposed to be set during the 2nd season, that they dusted off and slapped a coat of "it's 2161 rofl founding of teh federation lol" on and VOILA, THERE'S YER FINALE!

I guess they were really expecting to get picked up for season 5, and didn't have much time to write it, hence why apparently nobody gets promoted in 10 years.

Maybe Mayweather would've been promoted if he'd ever speak up and be noticed

^^

A lot of Mayweather fans...Cool...:)

Where does that leave Sato? She spoke up a bit more than Travis, and she was still an Ensign as well...(And the aforementioned Reed spoke up a bit more than Sato and Mayweather, both, but he remained a Lieutenant)...

I think it leaves them both in script-originally-set-in-2153-hurriedly-dusted-off-and-reworked-with-two-weeks-til-air temporal limbo :D

Or, of course, the historical records could've been corrupted over time, and little details like updated rank left out of the simulation ;)

I hope Hoshi will finally get promoted in Beneath the Raptor's Wing. It'd be about time.

So many things are going on in TrekLit now, I'm trying to keep up....

It's an exciting time....

We'll see what happens with our cute communications officer in time...

Going strictly by on screen canon... It was established in TNG "The Outcast" that the Federation was founded in 2161. Since ENT "Broken Bow" takes place in 2151, we know it's ten years until the founding ceremony. Since the unmentionable episode shows that cermony, the Enterprise has been in service for ten years.

Having not read the novels, yet, I don't know what all is tweaked about "that episode." However, from known canon, it seems that this part of the episode is correct.

Also, it is odd that nobody got promoted, especially after serving through an entire war. However, neither Mayweather, Sato, nor Reed, nor Harry Kim for that matter end up in that bad of shape. Data has them all beaten with his FIFTEEN years as a Lt. Commander. If there was ever an officer who deserved a promotion it was Data.

I'm also recalling that what we saw onscreen was part of a simulation, so maybe Riker didn't get all the facts straight for his holodeck program...
