Rename A Aircraft Carrier.

T'Girl

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Just ran across this on the internet, it's about not naming the next U.S. Navy aircraft carrier after a president, but after the U.S.S. Enterprise. Better than naming the ship after Gerald Ford.

We The Undersigned:
Call upon the Congress of the United States to remand H. CON. RES. 83 and replace it with a resolution supporting the naming of CVN-79 or the next nuclear aircraft carrier to be constructed, the USS ENTERPRISE.
Call upon the Secretary of the Navy to support this petition of the tax-paying people of these United States and name the next nuclear aircraft carrier to be constructed the USS ENTERPRISE.

Also send a E-mail to your elected officials. Use the same language as in the petition.

While I'm not at all in favor of naming warships after politicians (actually I think the Navy's whole naming scheme rather sucks with the exception of naming cruisers and amphibious assault ships after famous battles), I think perhaps the name Enterprise should be given a rest for a short while.

How about the Kumari? ;)

Seriously, is there a carrier with the name Intrepid still in service, or just the one parked up in NYC? It's a nice name.

Signed. There should always be an Enterprise in the USN!

And there should never be a capital ship named after Gerry Freakin Ford!

Nope, not in service. It is a cool name. We need more names like that.
The British have the best names, the sheer ballsyness of calling ships Victorious, Invincible, Vengeance wins hands down.

Japanese names are also quite cool, for the contrast between warships with the poetic names (case in point, Blue Dragon, Fortunate Crane, Great Phoenix).

Italian Navy is not bad, but a bit too bland.

Lets keep in mind that the name Enterprise at least in the Navy was made famous by the original aircraft carrier and not Star Trek! I mean heck that is why Star Trek chose that name in the first place.

Either way I agree that the ship should be given a better name than that of a president (all the good presidents have been taken anyway, now they are just naming them for political interest)

The navy always needs an Enterprise in my opinion. Actually it's one of the best known ships in the United States navy for the very reason of Star Trek (that was told to me by their Public Affairs Officer when I took a tour of the ship as a child).

But I've heard there are multiple petitions out with various names and Congress has already suggested a few on their own. Two I've heard of are:

Arizona
Goldwater

The Navy needs to think up a new naming scheme eventually. They're running out of Presidents! They're already up to the U.S.S. George H. W. Bush. If they keep this up, their next three will have to be the U.S.S. William J. Clinton, U.S.S. George W. Bush, and U.S.S. Barack H. Obama.

I can't imagine the Navy is too happy at the prospect of naming a capital ship after a Democrat -- and no one wants to be associated with George W. Bush!

In the fiction world of SeaQuest DSV there was an Aircraft Carrier USS William Jefferson Clinton mentioned. Commander Ford was offered its captaincy in the first season finale if memory serves. He turned it down and the SeaQuest's Chief Engineer took the job.

I can see naming a carrier Arizona to honor the ship and crew that went down at Pearl Harbor.

But GOLDWATER?! FORD?! What the heck for?

Only in America would we name a ship after a president famous for stumbling and bumping his head!:guffaw::rommie::guffaw::rommie:
