How I Met Your Mother Season Four

So I just finished watching the DVD of How I Met Your Mother Season Four! I love this show, but I haven't been able to watch it "live" before so I must wait the loooong year for the DVD. Fortunately now I can watch it live for the first time ever! I've been taping all the episodes so far this season, banking them up for the time they we finished the DVD of last year.

Anyway, I'd heard several people on this board say that S4 was crap and it killed their love for the show and Ted became so unbearable this year. I don't get this at all. I had no problems with this season. I still love the show and find it hilarious. The only negative I could say is that maybe there weren't quite as many "four star" episodes but the show is consistently excellent. I don't think I've ever seen a *bad* episode.

There were some classic episodes this year. Barney's secret family. Barney and Marshall sex-texting Ted. Marshall going to the toilet at work. And so on.

I didn't find Ted to be a terrible character this year. He went through some bad times but never became unfunny or pathetic (the way Marshall did at the start of S2).

One thing does perplex me though. Why in the world, in the entire season, not once, NOT ONCE, does Barney ever mention the Bro Code???? He used to mention it constantly. They published a real life book about it. Was there a legal rights issue because of the book or something?

Also, we went the entire year without Marshall slapping Barney. That disappointed me.

The finale finally delivered on two of the show's greatest mysteries; "How I Met Your Mother" and THE GOAT. How he meets her was certainly shocking twist I didn't see coming; I guess we HAVE to meet her in Season Five now a-right? And it should be an interesting situation. I guess they won't be allowed to date the entire season because she's his student (I'm assuming she's a 30ish student so it's not creepy) leading to romantic tension. Can't wait to see what her personality is. Also, who they'll cast. Because it has to be someone incredible. They've been building up this perfect woman for 4.5 seasons. How do you deliver on the hype?

As for the goat, I gotta say they disappointed me with that one. The buildup for the goat last year was huge. It should have been bigger. My GF thought the goat should have eaten the perfect building design causing him to lose the job. I think the goat should have head-butted Ted as he was about to make the leap, causing him to fall off the building and sticking him in a cast over the summer like Barney last year.

As for Robin and Barney, I think they would make the perfect messed up couple. Basically they have an open relationship where Barney is allowed to go around screwing all the chicks he wants but only for one night stands. Because neither one of them wants a comitted relationship. I could see Robin being happy with that in a weird way...

I definitely still love this show. It's so wonderful that in addition to having your normal zany sitcom you also have this complicated continuity being told from the future with foreshadowing and callbacks. Like in the 3rd to last episode when Ted goes out with the yellow umbrella and Old Ted says this is how it happens... when he meets Stella that was a real shocking twist. And I figured at that point oh Stella is friends with the Mother and she'll introduce them to each other. But nope!

I just started Season 4 (I'm about 4 episodes in), and so far I think it's just as funny as ever. I didn't read too much of your post because I don't want to be spoiled.

It's the cool thing to bash any season of HIMYM. Personally I loved S4 and goes with the theme of change in the show.

i can't give you any example but i feel like it may have lost a step. I mean it is my favorite show on TV right now and is still legen--wait for it--but i don't think that season or this season so far, is as strong as the first three.

All I know is that I watch it on my iPod at the gym while doing cardio, and people look at me weird when I start cracking up on the elliptical.

I think the reason why it doesn't feel as funny is that people aren't watching it in a DVD format.

Everything is so dense in a half hour show that by the time the momentum gets going the show ends.

Thats just my $0.02

I can barely watch regular TV broadcasts anymore for this very reason. Commercials ruin the flow!
