I don't think you can compare Smallville to Doctor Who...they're constructed very different and about totally different things. We all know as Superman fans that eventually Clark Kent becomes Superman...my point really has always been you can only tell so many stories of Clark before Superman until you start running out of things to do or start becoming repetitive. Smallville has been great at telling "event" or mythology stories but then we get the fillers or episodes that fall flat for whatever reason. It becomes frustrating. Clark is like what 22 or 23 right now? They're attempting to mature the characters and the show...and the fact that it's called Smallville, they barely go to Smallville any more they should have changed the name to Metropolis five seasons ago. Clark assuming the identity of the Blur is all well and good but is not the same as him being Superman. Prolonging the inevitable so you can milk the series as long as possible is...bothersome at best.

Now that gave me an idea. Have Clark regenerate at the series finale. It could be Brandon Routh :p

That would solve the issue of Lois not knowing Clark before Superman.

I heard somewhere that calling the show "Smallville" doesn't refer to the town but to Clark Kent...his nickname and since for Smallville Clark Kent is the character and Superman is the disquise.

^ Actually I've always thought it would be really cool for Clark to emerge from his training in the series finale as Dean Cain Superman but then we got Dean Cain last season so this wouldn't happen.

Smallville has the same problems that Heroes does, some big characters with lots of superpowers , but if they were fully allowed to use those powers would end most storylines too quickly.

Even worse, Smallville has something Heroes does not, it has a destiny, we dont know the destiny of any of the Heroes characters, but Clark Kent we do. Smallville also has that annonying Dawson Creek type teen romance (being on the WB) and further more its been a victim of poor planning, I dont think the show ever thought it would go this long, and so didnt plan for a time when Clark was mature and should be Smallville, its maybe only due to theCW that Smallville is still around.

Its been said many times here, that producers need to draw a line under Smallville and start Metropolis, the problem is TV does not always work like that, to say nothing of the "no flights no tights" ban, that have made the writers unwilling to turn Clark into a hero, that they are starting to do now.

The lack of budget does not help matters either, Clark is going to require some CGI and stunts.

All they have to do is order Welling to put on the Superman suit. He'll walk.

    End of show.

It's well past time for Clark just become Superman and for the series to go one from there, as a Superman series.

Welling needs to grow up and don the glasses and cape already and be friggin' Superman.

Tom, you're 30. You're too old to go back to modeling and too old to be self-concious about wearing glasses for a TV part you've also got no career possibilites in acting after Smallville ends.

    Become friggin' Superman already!

He might as well just wear the red jacket and a blue Superman shirt with the blue jeans and brown boots.

The whole black outfit with the \S/ is just silly.

Looks good on the Midnighter, who is the gay effectively violent parody of Batman who is married to the gay effectively violent parody of Superman... But it's not like any one reads the Authority any-more.

All Kal needs is a good old fashioned gimp mask to complete the homage to the parody of himself.

I think that Smallville would have worked better had it been pitched with a five year plan so that WB/CW could see exactly where the story was going and what Millar and Gough had planned so they could make up their minds when it came to renew the show. It seemed like the show suffered a bit from not knowing if it would be back for the first three or four years if I recall correctly.

I do not hate Smallville. It's my third favorite show on the air right now (after Doctor Who and Curb Your Enthusiasm) I am just frustrated with the inconsistency of some of the episodes and amped up drama and angst. These characters are in their early twenties now, this isn't Gossip Girls, they're not rich and spoiled divas (I admit I'm generalizing that show since I've never watched a full episode) nor is it 90210. I understand being on this network merits this type of storytelling but it's frustrating to see them act like teenagers sometimes when they're not. Eventually Clark is going ot have to get over his self doubt and angst about carrying the world's weight on his shoulders and become the man we all know he should be...we seem to be inching towards this in this season.

I have argued with my friends for a while now that the only way to connect this series with the Superman-universe is in the series finale that the Fortress is going to have to preform a massive world wide reset button/erase people's memory. TOO many people have seen clark's face. Even if Clark wears the traditional outfit, people like Lois would recognize him.

Both Lois and Lex have been plonked on the head and knocked unconscious so many times I have to wonder about their ability to form any memories at all.

He'll ride the royalties from being on the show for 9 years and be a fixture on the convention circuit for years to come.

Maybe do a shot on CSI and some other canadian series.

Even his TV character has manned up and is taking steps to be Superman and yet Welling isn't.

Although the show is about "Superman before Superman"

How does he feel about old man make up?

Skip over "Superman" and get right into his golden years with his powers failing or weakening as he has adventures in a nursing home?
