Beverly in "All Good Things"

Uncle Pennybags

Ensign
Newbie
I just watched All Good Things again for the first time in over a decade. All in all its a great series finale, and I don't remember being so bothered by this before. Maybe just because I was a lot younger myself at that time.

But, they aged everybody significantly in the future, and Beverly just added a touch of gray. What's up with that? It was particularly jarring for me, for some reason, watching it again.

Just curious if anybody knows anything, or has heard anything, of the reasons behind this. Was it some matter of vainness, on McFadden's part? Or was the make up crew just not up to the task to age a woman (convieniently we don't have to see Troi age)?

She barely looks older than she does in the present time segments, while Picard's a dottering, decrepit, old man and Jordi, Riker and Worf who were significantly younger than her all look far older than her.

Doctors know how to take care of themeselves, perhaps Crusher got beautiful skin just like Bones got extreme longevity.

Actually Picard looked pretty good for being 25 years older(spousal benefit?), he just forgot how to shave.

I remember reading or watching something about the filming of All Good Things where they talked about how hard a time they had with McFadden's make-up because she has such fair/delicate skin. I'll see if I can dig it up.

But she definitely has more done to age her than just a few grey hairs. I always thought she looked significantly older in the future scenes.

Beverly was born in 2324, so that makes her 71 in the alternate future of 2395.

Jean-Luc was born in 2305 making him 90.

we do get to see an aged Troi in "Future Imperfect"

that is set in 2383 a mere four years after the date of Nemesis and arguably she is less a sex pot there then real life Marina Sirtis turned out to be for an equivalent chronological age.

I would surmise that women in both 20th century Hollywood and 24th century fiction have conquered aging. Contemporary men have failed again.

(On edit)

In universe explainations of male aging.

(A) Geordi = got married, got fat no mystery there

(B) Admiral Riker = Collapse of Romulan Empire to Klingons means Enterprise-D stationed near Gamma Hydra on war patrol and resulting prolonged exposure to aging radiation.

(C) massive anger and negative emotion over Troi's death leads to premature aging ala

An old friend of mine's parents are well into their 70s and their hair still are very red like Beverly's in the alternate future timeline....

No it's not... they said on screen that it had been 25 years since they had served together... The "present" timeline of All Good Things was 2370, putting the future timeline at least in 2395.

Why would the script describe the vineyard seen as stardate 47xxx + 25 years?

Also later on in the script are the references to Data's office and his clothing which are described as 24th century, therefore the earliest date can be 2395 and no later than 2400. How old do you want Picard to be? Over a 100? That is just ludricrous.

3A ANGLE - CLOSE ON A VINE

4 EXT. VINEYARD - FUTURE - DAY

We are now twenty-five years in the future. Picard is
an OLD MAN, wearing civilian clothes and a hat to
protect himself from the sun. He has a beard and
longer hair. (But he should not look as old as he did
at the end of "The Inner Light".) He is kneeling in a
row of grape vines at his home in France (as seen in
"Family").

STAR TREK: "All Good Things... " - 03/10/94 - ACT ONE 6.

4 CONTINUED:

He is reaching out for a vine with the same hand and in
the same manner that we just saw him hold out his cup
in Troi's quarters. As his hand closes around the
vine, he hesitates. He seems disoriented, confused for
a moment, just as he described to Troi. He looks
around the vineyard in puzzlement. But the moment
passes, and he accepts this time as the present.

He concentrates on examining the vine in his hand. He
takes a pruning shear and snips off a few stray
branches. There are gardening tools nearby. He works
quietly for a moment... then we hear a voice shout
across the vineyard.

GEORDI'S VOICE
(calls out)
Captain Picard to the Bridge!

Picard reacts, a little surprised. He looks toward the
sound of the voice, shielding his eyes from the sun...

5 NEW ANGLE

revealing GEORDI walking toward Picard. He is wearing
civilian clothes and he has also aged twenty-five
years. His VISOR is gone and has been replaced by
ARTIFICIAL EYES, which have a distinctive electronic
look to them. Geordi is smiling broadly.

GEORDI
(with humor)
Sir, I think we have a problem
with the warp core, or the phase
inducers, or some other damn
thing.

Picard stands up with some difficulty. He's old, and
his voice and attitude should suggest advanced age and
an eccentric, sometimes cantankerous demeanor.

PICARD
Geordi...

The two men approach each other and shake hands --
these are two old friends who haven't seen each other
in a very long time.

GEORDI
Hello, Captain... or should I make
that Ambassador?

STAR TREK: "All Good Things... " - 03/10/94 - ACT ONE 7.

5 CONTINUED:

PICARD
(snorts)
Hasn't been Ambassador for a while
either.

GEORDI
How about Mister Picard?

PICARD
How about... Jean-Luc?

GEORDI
(smiles)
I don't know if I can get used to
that.

They look at each other for a moment, taking in the
sight.

PICARD
Good Lord, Geordi. How long has
it been?

GEORDI
Oh... about nine years.

PICARD
No, no... I mean, since you last
called me Captain? When was the
last time we were all together...
on the Enterprise?

GEORDI
Close to twenty-five years.

PICARD
Twenty-five years...
(looks him over)
Time's been good to you.

Here are a couple of shots from the present and the future. I think she looks like she has quite a bit of make up on in the future. (Or maybe she has a lot of make up on in the present!)

... I'm a little confused here, you just proved MY point. It says right there in the script that it is 25 years in the future. Season 7 of TNG takes place in 2370, which means that it the future timeline takes place in 2395. So the anti-time future was not 2383 like you said...

I was talking about "Future Imperfect" for 2383(as per the headline of my original post). Do you know of others episodes where Troi has grey hair? That is why I posted it. She clearly was not in the future of All Good Things.

Re: we do get to see an aged Troi in "Future Imperfect"

^Just one (where that alien ambassador or something came onboard with her cranky "mother").

Gates McFadden (and Marina Sirtis thinking about it) both peaked in hotness towards the end of TNG up to and including Generations.

The change in make-up helped. Some of the palettes they used for McFadden and Sirtis in earlier seasons are absolutely criminal. Somewhere in S7 they seem to have copped on that blusher doesn't have to be applied with a trowel.

And in Gates McFadden's case, the loss of those atrocious wigs helped too.

I am among those who thought she looked noticeably older in AGT. The make-up was quite good, I thought.

Mind you, although I am not a McFadden disliker, I didn't think her portrayal of age was quite as good as her makeup. It wasn't bad or anything, but it wasn't great.
