Well, I am officially confused. Where's the "sexism" here? Where is the "backtracking"? What is there to be "embarrassed" about here?

As an older female - old enough to be most of you guys' mother, or at least rapidly aging aunt - I haven't seen anybody say anything the least bit questionable in this thread except the poster or posters who seemed to think Marina Siritis should look the same now as she did when she was on TNG. But even that wasn't sexism; that was wishful thinking.

I think they did a fine job on Gates' makeup in AGT - we've got the more conservative hairstyle, more defined nasal-labial folds, and a hint of a coming turkey neck. And since I usually dislike Gates' performance as Crusher (I think it's usually a little "big" for TV), I found her more restrained acting in AGT a welcome reprieve.

I didn't notice her acting as more restrained, then again I didn't pay all that close attention to HOW she was acting... What are some of the ways she was being more restrained?

Just combed YouTube for some copyright violation-worthy AGT footage, but found only Gates fan compilations set to Rod Stewart. Anyway ... the example I was thinking of when I posted that was Bev's line about "he's Jean-Luc Picard and if he wants oe more adventure ..." etc. I thought her delivery was befitting a captain, that it reflected a number of years more experience than her 2371-era character. Also, her movements (as someone earlier noted) are much more contained, bordering on the stiff. I have no doubt that the makeup informed that physical choice, but I still call it an acting choice, rather than a failing. And a good one.

I agree with you completely, she acts, in a word, older. Yes, she acts like she has a lot more experience than she did during the time period of the series. She also acts a bit more aged as well. The two blended together to, in my opinion, really help her image of being from 25 years into the future. I agree, she did do a good job.

Gates McFadden (and Marina Sirtis thinking about it) both peaked in hotness towards the end of TNG up to and including Generations.

I'm going to third (fourth?) that sentiment. She does seem to act older and more restrained, like time has weighed heavily upon her.
I think it's well done, as we don't get to see Gates play too many meaty roles, and this seemed a little more spotlight centric for her, which was nice.

I mean, c'mon, if you were the makeup artist you wouldn't let those actresses go out there looking bad, would you? You'd want to mature their looks, but still be beautiful.

Here are a couple of shots from the present and the future. I think she looks like she has quite a bit of make up on in the future. (Or maybe she has a lot of make up on in the present!)

For the latter part of the seventh season, McFadden had way too much makeup on her. Compare this to the more moderate latter part of the sixth season and earlier part of the seventh. As for the future version (and in rebuttal of the "not hot" remark earlier), it seems that producers can never get things right. The actor either ages worse than depicted or, in the case of McFadden, ages better, like in her 2006 conventions.
