Paramount has the movie rights, CBS the TV rights, and both are part of Viacom, right?

My last status on new start trek on TV is that probably not for a while because the CO (or whatever) of CBS hates Star Trek.

So I wonder...could Viacom order/force CBS to commision a new series or don´t they have any kind of that influence on them at all?

We've been discussing this stuff in the What channel should a new Trek TV series be on? thread.
Perhaps FreddyE you don't know how these major entertainment conglomerates work?
Viacom owns the companies but doesn't make the decisions for certain properties owned by each company.
It is much more of a business at the Viacom level rather than a movie executive's decisions like at Paramount Pictures.

Thanks for the link.
Yeah...I´m pretty much green when it comes to this....already took me a while to get the concept of tv "networks"....since this just doesn´t here.

The modern Viacom doesn't own either company. The old Viacom is legally now the CBS Corporation, although that's a vast oversimplification. CBS Corp has total say on TV rights and merchandising. Paramount has total say on film and DVD distribution. Neither owns ST entirely.

CBS, not Viacom, retains control of the partial and total over-the-air television & radio broadcasting, TV production & distribution , publishing, pay-cable, recording, and outdoor advertising assets formerly owned by the larger company.

So Leslie Moonves has more power than we thought...

Basically, the Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures can do Star Trek movies under license from CBS. Ultimately, CBS is the owner of all things Star Trek, but the movies are done by Paramount. I think Paramount is officially out of the television business as of this year...
