"The ________ " titles

Nardpuncher

Rear Admiral
Well, I went and counted all the episodes in Trek (not including TAS) that are just "The _____ "

TOS- 4, including the unaired The Cage
TNG- 18
DS9- 23
VOY- 9
ENT- 13

I'm surprised that DS9 had the most as I always thought it seemed like TNG had the most "The ____ " titles.
looking through VOY it certainly had the most single word titles that were never very good at telling you much about the story or sounding terribly intiguing to me, titles like Night, Gravity, Bliss, Relativity and Fury, among many more.
I didn't do the math but maybe ENT had the most percentage wise because it only had 4 seasons.

Seinfeld: 179 of 180 episode titles beginning with 'The —'. That's a 99,4 percentage of all episodes!

I dunno, I liked that title. Something about its plainness seems very appropriate considering the theme of the episode, which is one of desolation, loneliness and the feeling of being lost. Most associations with the word night that I can come up with – like darkness, fear, the unknown, insomnia – mirror what's shown in the episode. So I think it was a rather good title.

TOS:

The Cage
The Menagerie
The Changeling
The Apple
The Empath

Did you mean to say NOT including The Cage?

It's funny someone mentioned this. I don't know how other series are, but a lot of Trek episodes had "The" in the title and it just made me cringe after a while enough to start a write-up on the subject for my own site. If I recall, TNG Season 2 also had a bunch of "The" episode names in a row and it made me wonder who in the staff was coming up with these titles.

Well, at least it wasn't like Friends, where every episode title started with "The One Where".

I don't have a problem with "The________" titles, as long as the "_________" part makes the episode in question identifiable.

I have no problems with "The...." titles either, what I have a problem with are the titles used for the german dub of TOS...instead of translating the original title or making up a good new one they ALWAYS used a line of dialog from the episode or a totally nonsensical title. So for example: "Man Trap" would be "Last of its kind" and "Naked Time" is "Implusion in the spiral"...O_O

By those counts it would seem you mean only those that were followed by a single word rather than multiple words? As in, not counting "The Trouble With Tribbles," "The Last Outpost," etc?

Just in case anyone's interested, the TAS ones are:
"The Survivor"
"The Jihad"
