Kirk Brothers & kid Klingon guards deleted scenes

Very interesting.

Im also very pleased to see some very traditional VFX techniques being used there, such as the forced perspective barn. It just shows that yes, these techniques were used in the film, and that it's not just all CG.

I wonder why they decided to cut these out of the finished film. Maybe we'll see them in the director's cut?

What we saw on the big screen is the director's cut from what I've heard Abrams say.
He has no plans to re-edit & integrate any deleted scenes into the movie.

Well, that's too bad. At least they'll be included on the DVD. However, deleted scenes that aren't integrated into a director's cut aren't part of he official canon, so I guess we'll just have to be satisfied with them being unofficial background insights.

SALVOR, you rock!

O M G ! MINI KLINGONS!!!! I never knew they did that in films!!!! And I'm LoLing over the kid who didnt want to do another take or two. I'll bet his parents were like, WHAT?????? That is really amazing stuff....and i never would have guessed the Kirk scene was a kid. Unreal!

Any idea what the building behind the Kirk brothers is supposed to be?

The EVA walk across the planet surface in ALIEN was done with kids in pressure suits to make the set look larger. IIRC some of the Space Jockey shots also, but I'm not positive.

..and yeah, Salvor does rock. Thanks for pointing those out!

HUH! I just rewatched Alien about two weeks ago.....and had no idea. Going to have to pop that in again to take a look at that.

I could see why JJ would question putting in the Klingon scene in (where the kids are walking) as they really do walk like little kids... (that is, if he kept the whole klingon/rura pente thing in to begin with.)

(run on sentence, much?)

So "Johnny" is his brother? Hes older though...his birth was unaffected by Nero altering history, so shouldn't he STILL be George Samuel Kirk, Jr.? "Sam"?

Oh well. I guess there's an explanation.

I'm just trying to picture that kid sitting still for having a bald cap and tattoos put on him in the makeup chair. Squirm, squirm!

MINI KLINGONS!!!! I never knew they did that in films!!!!

Roddenberry and Wise used kids in engineering suits in ST:TMP, to make the Enterprise forced perspective sets give the illusion of a much bigger space. The tiny suits were sold off as part of the "It's a Wrap!" eBay auctions. They were very cute.

Well, he'd still be born George Samuel Kirk Jr, but this altered timeline's young Jim Kirk grows up calling him "Johnny" for some reason, rather than "Sam". (You'll remember, in the original timeline, Jim Kirk was said to be the only person to call his brother "Sam".)

In my mother's family, several of the males, across several generations, used to call each other "Joe", even though none of them had that name, or anything like it. In my father's family, my Dad and uncle used to only call each other "Fez", dating back to an old joke between them involving the wearing of an actual fez at a dance.

Nicknames don't require onscreen explanations; they just happen. The explanations are often very underwhelming for the time it takes to explain them. Similarly, we never got an onscreen reason for "Bones" in the old timeline, only in the background material. And the new movie had fun tweaking it.

I remeber some speculation, back when some of the earliest cast lists appeared, about why someone credited as "Klingon guard" would have an IMDb entry showing them to be six years old, or whatever it was. Here's the answer to that.

These boys, about 6 or 7 at the time of filming, appeared on the TrekMovie cast list and in IMDB credits for the movie.

John Bartlebaugh - Klingon guard
Cole Fritch - Klingon prison guard

Another Klingon guard or two and a Klingon prisoner (the little Nero?) were also on the list, but a quick search isn't turning up their names. These have all since been removed from cast lists, most likely because their scenes were cut.

One other child on the current IMDb cast list for the movie:

Joshua Greene ... Child Running in Snow (uncredited)

For a moment, I thought it might be one of those supposed arcology structures which appeared in the background of a lot of the "Iowa" shots, but another look says it's probably supposed to be some kind of farm building like a hay barn.

In the dialog, they're talking about Jim washing the car, which the book says he did regularly; so I think it is an outbuilding they use like a garage.

At first I wasn't happy about that, but since then after watching quite a few movies which have the added scenes inserted back into certain movies I am beginning to not like that practice and I am beginning to trust the wisdom of why many scenes were cut to begin with.

Sure, there are exceptions but all in all I think it is best to stick with the theatrical version.

Such fakery! I may never take a Klingon seriously again (although after TNG/DS9 it's not so hard). I may never trust a barn i see on TV again. Kid Kirk running into the ice cave? It's insane. And eye-opening.

But how much to they really save just by having a half-height corridor? Is it really more than a short corridor with CG extensions? And surely it's cheaper to film in front of a real barn, rather than model a mini one. Or is it? This is crazy!

Really really interesting stuff! I knew about rooms being built for perspective (like in LotRs) but i never knew they used kids like this. The magic of film making!

I cant wait to see this movie again...i'll be examining those scenes with a fine toothcomb.
