Furries

I find this image appropriate for this topic

The idea that being into furry porn/arousment is similar to homosexuality is absolute nonsense and I really, really hope I don't have to explain why that is, do I?

^^Okay, now that's freaky. Clearly there's a line where you can get too photoreal.

No, I don't think you do.

Damn. We're including alcohol in the definition of "sexual fetish" now? In that case, "adult situations" was a poor choice of words; I was specifically referencing the kind of sexual/kinky/nakedy thing that Dead's been going on about. I don't think anyhting in Lizardbeth's art is, for example, more suggestive or risque than anything a kid could see on TV, which is the gist of my point.

Er, no, I was just talking about "adult situations" there. Also I don't see your point ... a kid can see some pretty suggestive and risque things on tv. It's difficult to avoid them!

I'm utterly lost now. I think it's possible for people to be interested in this type of art even if it's not overly sexualized. I don't think anyone is debating that. It does seem to be the minority, though. And personally I don't like it even when it's not completely sexualized.

When it comes down to it, I guess I just feel like echoing Robert Maxwell here: Don't want.

True. This thread has gone 9 pages and I think I now have a good idea of what many people here think, in Miscellaneous at least. Contrary to popular belief by some, I am a bit surprised at the reaction in certain ways. This thread was not and is not intended to be adversarial. This isn't right vs. wrong, good vs. bad. I didn't start it for that purpose and I will not let it become that.

That being said, I will continue to post my desktops as they are, whether it be furry, scenic or any other number of wallpaper choices. My avatars will continue to be whatever I like to put up, whether it be furry, scenic or symbolic in nature, as well as a range of other choices. I want you folks to understand that I'm not doing it because it's controversial, I'm not doing it to troll, I do it because that is what I like.

I would like to continue this thread if anyone has anymore questions or thoughts. There are plenty of people in Misc.

Just a tip, J, when talking to real women, stay in the furry closet! In fact... even bring the Star Trek thing along slowly...

Actually, quite a few women are into furry fandom, many of them being artists themselves.
That being said, point taken. ;)

What popularized the idea of furries and sex has much to do with a particular episode of CSI called "Fur and Loathing in Las Vegas". Like all such shows, things like that need to be taken with a huge grain of salt. They're not out for truth, they're out for ratings and controversy.

Word. ;) :p

I always think it's funny on Law & Order how they just run around accusing and arresting everyone until they find who they're looking for.

The issue of furry strip poker still needs to be addressed anyway...

I think furry strip poker would involve taking off the fursuit first, then taking off clothes. Two headed dragons would have an obvious advantage in this situation.

Just to add to the notion that furry fandom isn't predominantly sexual in nature ... A friend of mine who's a very active artist in the furry fandom once did this drawing of me as an anthropomorphic bear. These people-as-furries caricatures is what she's doing for the most part.

No-one is actually turned on by this, right? :(

Well, this was a long Thread....

I'm a bit bewildered by all the controversy here. But then, being on the Internet has brought me a lot of disillusionment about SF Fandom; it's not what I thought when I was a kid.

Having been a big reader of Mythology since I was about six, I've never really thought twice about "Furry Fandom." All cultures have iconic characters, including their Gods, who either change into animals or have animal characteristics, and a great deal of it is sexual. In everyday life, animal similes and metaphors are often used to describe sexuality-- she's like a cat, he's a wolf, and so on. Women often wear leopard skin or tiger stripe underwear because it makes them feel sexual.

Genre art frequently involves characters that are mostly Human with animal characteristics-- flip through any volume of Spectrum. Mermaids and Centaurs are ubiquitous. In the mainstream world, of course, there are Playboy bunnies and many strippers use animal costumes, especially cats-- at least they did in the days of Burlesque.

Personally, I think it's great that there's a Furry subculture. This is what I like about the world in general and the creative genres in particular. The colorful diversity and variety of people out there. The weirder the world is, the more wonderful it is, as far as I'm concerned. :bolian:
