Things that really took you by surprise

thank goodness there is someone else that loves the design of the bridge I think it looks modern and stunning sorry if there is anyone that doesn't like it.
You don't need to apologise. I'm sure they're perfectly okay with their opinion.

It also surprised me that Uhura blew her way onto the Enterprise. That reduction of her character was pretty hard to take.

The extent if the Spock/Uhura Relationship

Amanda Grayson getting killed off

How much I liked Sarek

How much I liked Sulu

How little time Marjel Roddenberry got

How cool the Enterprise was

How Badass Robau was

How good Pine played Kirk.

And so on.

Not a thing, other than that both have the look of having been posted with an aim to annoy. :vulcan:

Please, did it really look like Uhura was just using Spock to get on the Enterprise? What movie were YOU watching?? Cause it sure looked like there was a real relationship there to me.

I'm so tired of people complaining about Uhura in this movie. She got at least as much to do in the movie as Sulu or Checkov (they were all only supporting characters after all), and she was just as tough, if not MORE so, than the original.

As opposed to Nichelle Nichols who more or less "blew her way" to an acting role?
What does one have to do with the other?

There was no reduction of the character when there wasn't really anything to reduce it from. Not sure how you get much further down than "Hailing frequencies open, sir."

I'm not sure if we're watching the same movie here. I saw the one where Uhura is probably the most important of the original supporting cast, moreso even than McCoy. Certainly she has way more relevance to characters and plot than either Sulu or Chekov, who are little more than ciphers on the bridge (in fairness, this is their usual role).

Complaining about a movie where the character has been given arguably her biggest role to date because it isn't big enough sounds bizarre.

The Spock/Uhura relationship for one. Totally out of left field and a surprise to everyone.

If I had to pick a second shock I'd say Amanda's death. Never heard leaks or spoilers about her getting killed. Strong stuff.

Dude, this thread is about "things that really took you by surprise", and I posted what took me by surprise. Don't jump to conclusions so damn easily.

Example? Both Chekov and Sulu actually use their station consoles to get things done while doing other extra stuff too (Chekov using the transporter, Sulu fighting Romulans on the drill). What does Uhura do at her comms station that aids the crew? Nothing. What does she do when she's not at her station? Make out with Spock which also doesn't accomplish anything.

Again, where do you get this conclusion?

She stimulated Bootylicious mojo particles. Isn't that ENOUGH dammit?

Because "they", the people that dislike the bridge, are in the minority with their viewpoint. And either they are right, and the bridge design is bad or they are wrong and the bridge design is good.

In polite normal society, if ones viewpoint is in the minority then it is incumbent upon those holding the minor viewpoint to apologize. If they are actually in the right, this is an apology a la Aristotle - an explanation of the position that goes against the majority and a refutation of the majority position. If the minor viewpoint held is actually wrong, then a mea culpa is required. Either way, the minority view requires the explanation.

That the bridge design is bad is the minority view (here) (here) (here). If the viewholder still believes this position to be accurate, then that needs be explained. If the position is no longer held, then an apology asking for forgiveness for the incorrect view is given. These methods of interaction between polite normal people have been in place for thousands of years, and have served us well thus far.

Am I? Perhaps something is getting lost in translation, then. What, precisely, did you mean when you said:

...Uhura blew her way onto the Enterprise.

Worded that way, it reads like something which was neither shown nor was it implied by the dialogue in the movie I saw, and it's put rather indelicately. Was that not what you intended?

uhura put forth a logical arguement that she had earned her place on enterprise. she even cited examples of this.
there is no way it can be said she was some idiot who took advantage and got there because she had not earned it.

as a fan of early star trek who remembered charlie x i wasnt too suprised after the initial shock.
and i think orci has cited it as one of the reasons for what they did.

And where does Spock put her "unmatched skills" and expertise in communications to good use? As the boiler room receptionist. :shifty:
