Dexter S4 premiere - Living The Life

Yeah, I'll be watching.

In 12 months when it comes to DVD.

I wish I could afford Showtime. Not only for Dexter, but for the third season of Californication, which looks like it has fixed a lot of the problems I had with season two.

Alas.

Watched it, loved it. Rita is still annoying. Doesn't she understand he's got places to go and people to kill?
Has anyone read the books? They're great, and they give you a lot more insight into the character. Storyline's going in a different direction than the show, so that might bother some people. Just think of it as an alternate universe!

I read the first book, liked it. And I'm sure to be watching season four when it airs here. Dexter's the one TV show I follow religiously these days, though if I actually catch up Mad Men will likely be the other one.

Watched it, loved it! I was LOL at some moments, especially the beginning when Dexter goes through the motions of the credits while putting on his spit-up shirt, yawning endlessly, and the shoelace...! Poor Dex! This season's going to be great.

Dexter, Madmen, and Law and Order:Mothership are all I watch anymore.

I love the fact that they've brought back Lundy! They need to hang onto him as Dexter's ultimate nemesis - a guy who could quietly keep nibbling away at the not-quite-satisfyingly-solved BHB mystery without Dexter ever quite realizing what he's doing.

(Loved the way Dex kinda flinched when Matsuda mentioned the BHB to Lundy. I like the notion that someone can unnerve even Dex. And now that he's retired, he can devote all his time to following up anything that doesn't set right in his gut.)

I like Andre staying with the show. There's something about him that gives me the feeling he might ferret out Dex's secret.

The big thing they need to do this season is return the sense of menace to Dexter. He got a bit too tame-seeming last season. The Dark Passenger should be harder for him to control. He shouldn't just be some charming guy with an oddball hobby.

I'd also like to see more of the S1-2 tone returning to the show. There's something about it now that doesn't seem quite as witty and sharp - or as surreal. Maybe it's the production design? It's hard for me to put a finger on exactly what is missing about the surreal/stylized elements the show used to have more of.

Lastly, next season's serial killer should be a cannibal. That would make Matsuda happy. There are a lot more cannibals in this country than anyone realizes. :D

I wish I could afford Showtime.
They have a special deal for new subscribers - $7/month for six months is what I got (some places it might be $8). Had to call Comcast a couple times before I got a customer service person who understood what I was asking for, but persistence pays. :bolian:

I think the Dexter of the books is a distinctly different person. He's more chilly, witty, and emotionally distant, whereas TV Dexter is more morosely ironic, but you get a distinct sense that a real human being is behind the mask. TV Dexter is genuinely weighed down and stressed out by having to maintain his pose, but novel Dexter just glides lightly over it all, laughing all the way.

I suspect the novels are more accurate in their depiction of a true sociopath who really doesn't have emotions. TV Dexter is just kidding himself about not having emotions. The TV show is cheating a bit by depicting a serial killer so charming and sympathetic that I doubt he could actually exist. Sometimes it feels like science fiction (not a bad thing in my book.) But the guy in the novels would be veering too far away from the sympathetic Dexter formula that's made this show such a success.

It might not be realistic, but it's fun. A series about Ed Gein would simply be really, really unsettling and about as funny as waterboarding. Not that it wouldn't be interesting, it'd just be a completely different sort of show. Dexter captures rather exactly the sort of black humour I love the most - wry, understated, ironic.

And that just makes for great TV in my book. :)

Seen it, loved it. Love the return of Lundy, the parody of the intro and the keeping of Anton. Kinda sad at first that they didn't keep Angel's GF but I think a relationship with Batista might be intresting. Cool to see Lithgow but he seems to be playing one especially disturbed bastard.

Oh god yes, Cali last year sucked and i stopped watching, but the third season premiere was incredibly funny.

Watched Dexter last night (I don't pay for the premium channels like Showtime but my friend does!). Overall, I enjoyed it. I'm thrilled that Lundy is back on the show, and I was thoroughly creeped out by John Lithgow's character. I will say this much - I am already tired of baby Harrison. I worry that the baby will become a gimmick used throughout the season to cause Dexter to screw up or forget something (thus creating potential drama).

So...anyone want to second my nomination for a cannibal in S5? :D How would Dexter react? Probably think it was horribly unsanitary. Maybe he'd become vegan for a while.

Yeah I'll take that. Would be fun to see him react to that. Just because he likes blood doesn't mean he would aprove of a cannibal

I hate that I'm watching this as it airs instead of DVD. It's always such a come-down to realize that you have to wait a week. Usually, 2 episodes at a time is enough to satiate me. 1 is just cruel :(

Hey, so long as Julie Benz has at least one nude scene per season, Rita can be as annoying as she likes... :p

In a more serious vein, I'm one of those who watches this series on DVD, though a friend of mine who still owns a VCR keeps promising to tape the show for me, so the chance exists that I may get to see some of the season. I'm very intrigued by both the notion of Dexter as a father and Lundy returning; I'm not terribly impressed by John Lithgow, but then again I said the same thing about Smits last year, and he was amazing...

Excellent stuff. I love this show so much- probably as much as Lost. Great to see Lundy back, and the Batista + Laguerta pairing really works for me.

I am interested in the decision to let us in on the trinity killer's point of view so early on in the episodes. Dexter's rival each season has been a mystery we unravel at the same time as Dexter does, but in this case it seems we will be in the know before Dexter is. This ties in nicely with his being off his game slightly. Perhaps the trinity killer will figure out who Dexter is before Dexter figures out who he is?

So according to the previews Dexter will not be caught with the body but several of the bags will turn up missing. Very interesting.

I thought this was an EXCELLENT first outing for the new season. I had 3 seasons of Dexter just sitting around waiting to be watched... finally got around to it a few months back... I had an hour or two to kill on a Saturday morning, so I started Season 1... I didn't stop watching until about 3 am on MONDAY. I watched all three seasons all the way through.

Anyway, I like the Lithgow addition, however please limit his nudity in the future. It makes me uncomfortable seeing Q's ass.

The baby certainly makes for an interesting angle... anybody else think what happened at the end was a dream? Don't want to drop any spoilers (since the thread didn't have the "SPOILERS" word in the title) but if that really did happen, Dex is in for some serious, serious downfall.

Not necessarily - just because Dexter had an accident doesn't mean people will be rooting thru his van, wherever the tow truck takes it. As long as he gets to it before anything starts rotting, hey, maybe nobody will notice? :rommie:

I could see the cops thinking someone else was in the car with him, or he hit someone, and they broke to bits... that would make for a very interesting internal affairs investigation... Dexter accidentally hits, kills and dismembers the suspect he let walk...
